Even before AI dominated the world, I always discouraged my friends and classmates from urging their grandchildren to spend too much time learning English. I told them to let our kids concentrate on Chinese and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), but not on English any longer. Because STEM would make them more competitive in their profession, and the prominent Chinese would make them different from their peers. English will no longer be indispensable because AI will help us finish most of the jobs related to English. The report said some colleges in China have cut off the departments of foreign languages: You may wonder why I am writing the blog in English. I have no choice because I am a hunt-and-peck typist in Chinese. |
