齊有富人,家累千金。其二子甚愚,其父又不教之。 一日,艾子謂其父曰:“君之子雖美,而不通世務,他日曷能克其家?” A rich man of Qi amassed a great deal of wealth, but his two sons were not intelligent, and he paid little attention to their education. One day, Mr. Ai advised the father, "Your sons are alright, but they are not familiar with common affairs. How could they handle things well in the future?" Fumed, the father retorted, "My sons are smart and talented; why could they not be capable of handling things?" Mr. Ai said, "Why not give them a test? You can only ask them where the rice they eat comes from. If they know it, you can accuse me of saying a lie." So, the father summoned one of his sons to answer the question. With a smile, the son replied to the question carelessly, "How cant I know it? The rice comes from bags." The fathers face then was etched with a serious complexion, and he said, " You are so stupid. Dont you know the rice is from the fields?" Mr. Ai commented, "Like father, like son." |
