Yesterday, my granddaughter, a fourth grader, brought home an adorable tiny bug from school. The bug has an oval, black shield on its back and many legs like a centipede. She then showed me its funny Chinese common name she searched from her I-watch: "尋常球鼠婦.." and an even funnier English common name: "roly-poly." I do not know that Chinese common name, but I do know its English name, which has other meanings: a dessert like a roll made of suet pastry and jam, or an adjective to describe a short, round, and fat person. If I remember correctly, there was an American pop song named Roly-Poly during my high school days. |
