Both Chongqing and Chengdu are metropolitan cities, and both are tucked away in Sichuan, western part of China. Because developing Big West and accelerating urbanization are among the most significant strategies of Mainland nowadays, so either city is under very rapid development, so fast that people in Taiwan can not imagine. High-rise offices and apartment, averaging over thirty floors, burgeon like "mushrooming bamboo shoots after a spring rain" in suburban areas, neatly constructed with well-planed project, absolutely not just a mass of sprawling towns at all.(like those in Taiwan, e.g. Yonghe and Xindian). In downtowns, flyovers are everywhere. Needless to say, various routes of subway are also available or being under construction. I especially admire the beautifully designed litter bins installed on streets of Chengdu; within every 30-50 meters you can see one. That has helped a lot to make Chengdu a clean city. (I wonder why Taipei didn't do a simple thing like that?)
In short, either Chongqing or Chengdu is a magnified Hong kong from the aspect of city appearance. But people in either city, especially Chongqing, need improve themselves to elevate their homes to more civilized places to live in. For example, clothes are hanging for drying on the front balcony facing street is not unusual even of splendid apartments, impatient vehicles and pedestrians scrmble for roads, the expressions such as "Excuse me.", "Thank you", "Please" are rare to hear, etc. It calls for awareness of self-esteem from people themselves and the endeavor from government to create a more equalized society, and it takes time.
P.S. In ancient time, Chongqing was called "巴", and Chengdu, "蜀". They were rivals to each other historically; they are, even now.
