Yesterday when my wife was switching channel mode on the remote control, I happened to see a guy in a cemetery saying he was "celebrating" Qingming Day, and the consecutive long holidays. The usuage was quite a misnomer. In Qingming Day,( or Mourning Day, Tomb Sweeping Day), not Qingming Festival, people pay tribute and respect to the deceased, especially their ancestors. How could we "celebrate" the day? So, the appropriate expression is to say "commemorate"(紀念) this traditional day. |
