昨天在msn上和一位英國友人聊天,突然聊到他msn上的匿稱,寫著"The batman is sad",來看看我和他的一小段對話:

why is the batman sad?lol

batman is what i call myself

[Internet Man] 說:

put it to sleep

put .... down是我們常用的動詞片語,它有把所拿的東西或握住的東西放下之意(To put an object that you are holding onto the floor or onto another surface, or to stop carrying someone),

ex: I put my bags down on the floor while we spoken. (在我們交談時,我把我的袋子放到地上)

除此之外,以上對話的put our dog down是什麼意思呢? 從後文朋友解釋就可以了解put it to sleep,讓他長眠,指的是當動物太老或是生重病,必須讓他們一路好走時,可以用put down,也就是kill的意思,用溫和的方式結束他們的生命,我們再來看看這個例句:

EX: If a horse breaks its leg, it usually has to be put down.

下次再聽到類似的句子,我想我會說:"I am so sorry that you had to put your dog down."
