Hard hits and pressure from the first whistle kept New Zealand on the front foot as they downed England 34-16 in the women's rugby league World Cup in Featherstone.

The Kiwi Ferns opened the scoring after four minutes, a well-timed pass from Honey Hireme sending Karley Te Kana through on the left embroidery badges.

New Zealand's uncompromising defence kept England trapped in their own half, and Sarina Fiso doubled the lead when she found space following a nice set play from dummy-half.

Ten minutes later, Hireme's pace sent her through for New Zealand's third try, although England pulled one back when Amy Hardcastle crashed over after a nice switch from left to right out wide.

The Kiwis' 12-6 halftime lead disappeared soon after the restart, when Hardcastle scored between the uprights and captain Natalie Gilmour slotted the conversion to level the scores.

Fiso's second try regained the lead for New Zealand, but a Hireme fumble soon after gifted England possession and Hardcastle crossed for her third for England to again draw level.

With 13 minutes remaining, Akanese Pereira barrelled over and Laura Mariu's conversion stole the lead back for New Zealand.

The Kiwis finished strongly wine school, with tries to Kelly Maipi and another for Pereira rounding out the win.

New Zealand coach Lynley Tierney-Mani said England had shown huge improvement since losing their opening match of the competition to Australia 14-6.

"We put ourselves under pressure and gave England the game for a long period, but I'm happy with how my team responded to going behind and regained a grip on the game."

The Kiwi Ferns won their opening match of the competition 88-0 over France. Their next game is against Australia early on Friday (NZT) Asian college of knowledge management.
