英譯<大學>前言

退休後，我致力於英譯<四書>，其中<論語>，是古文中的口語白話。故我於2004年 先出版<漢英論語>，發行6000冊，存書不多。五年來，讀者頗能接受。

<學、庸> 義奧艱深，自感學養不足，在此且將 <大學>英譯，求教於網友。

孔子曰:「不知生，焉知死?」雖非無神論者，他畢竟是「敬鬼神而遠之。」的人文主義，與西方文化有差異。我本孔子的思想，與經典英譯大師李雅各JAMES  LEGGE 以及前們所譯有所出入，這也是我潛心重新英譯的本意, 用字力求淺易。先將幾個重要關鍵字，簡述如下:

一、釋天:  (1). Heaven vs hell = a institution of gods or God;  or a transcendental or super government; 如天命, 獲罪於天(有意志);  
(2) sky & earth(無意志即自然天) 如: 天何言哉四時行也(sky )百物生也(earth), [天之生物]  即物生於天地之間, 古人往往稱天含地，稱父含母，稱子含女 「如未學養子而後嫁者也. 悟自然現象為人性，(法天「大生之德---公; 法地「廣生之德」---愛) ; (3) creator.  造物者

二、釋身、心、性:  身person or body ; 心 (1): 有情之心heart ; (2)_理性之心  mind ; (3) conscience良心 (王陽明 致良知)  (4) nature or good-nature; original善性(孟); bad-nature惡性 (身性或慾)

大學 CLASSICAL TEXT

子程子曰：『大學孔氏之遺書。而初學入德之門也。於今可見古人為學次第者，獨賴此篇之存，而論、孟次之。學者必由是而學焉，則庶乎其不差矣。』

My master, the philosopher Cheng-zi said, 

‘The Great Learning is a Book transmitted by the Confucian School and the gate by which first learners enter into virtue. That we can now perceive the order in which the ancients perused their learning is solely owing to the preservation of this work, the Analects and Mencius are the second. Learners must commence their course with this, and then it may be hoped they will be kept from error.

經一章

大學之道，在明明德，在親民，在止於至善。知止而后有定，定而后能靜，靜而后能安，安而后能慮，慮而后得。物有本末，事有終始，知所先後，則近道矣。古之欲明明德於天下者，先治其國；欲治其國者，先齊其家；欲齊其家者，先修其身；欲修其身者，先正其心；欲正其心者，先誠其意；欲誠其意者，先致其知；致知在格物。物格而后知至，知至而后意誠，意誠而后心正，心正而后身修，身修而后家齊，家齊而后國治，國治而后天下平。自天子以自於庶人，壹是皆以修身為本。其本亂而末治者否矣。其所厚者薄，而其所薄者厚，未之有也。

The way of Great Learning is to clarify the clear virtue; to love people; and to rest on the best excellence. To have known the point should rest then to have one’s determination ; to have determinated then one’s heart can be calm; to have had calmness then can be repose ; to have reposed then can meditate deeply; to have had

meditation then can attaine the purpose. Things have their roots and branches. Affairs have their end and beginning. To know what the first or the last is we will reach the doctrine of Great Learning. The ancient who wants to clarify the clear  virtue of the people throughout the world, first gets his own state well-governed; wants to be well-governed his state, has first regulated his family; wants to regulate his family, has first cultivated his person; wants to cultivate his person, has first rectified his heart; wants to rectify his heart, has first gotten sincerity; wants to get sincerity, has first devoted to get wisdom ; wants to devote his wisdom, he must investigate into the things and events. Things and events are investigated, then the wisdom will be attained; the wisdom has attained, then his idea is sincere; having been sincere, then his heart is upright; his heart has been upright, then his person will be cultivated; his personality has been cultivated, then family will be regulated; his family has been regulated, then his state will be well-governed; his state has been well-governed, then the whole world will be reposed peacefully. From the emperor down to the mass of people, cultivating the person is the basic lesson of all people. It is impossible that the roots are disordered, but the branches flourished. It had never been the case that it should be an important thing, but be cared for slightly; and the slight be cared for importantly.
