We
are sad today, and we will be sad for quite a while.
We are not moving
on. We are embracing our mourning.
We are Virginia Tech ...
-- Nikki Giovanni, University Distinguished Professor, poet, activist
Dear Colleagues, Students, and HuaFan University Community Members,
No doubt you have heard the tragic news. On April 16th,
32 students and faculty members of Virginia Tech University were
senselessly shot and killed on the school’s campus. Perhaps you saw it
on TV or read about it in a newspaper. Most of you have likely moved on
with your lives without much thought to this terrible incident. At
first, I did too. Yet, I am asking you now to stop what you are doing
and consider the implications of this tragedy.
Many of you may feel that these murders happened on the other side of the
world, that America is a violent place, that this does not affect your
lives. You are wrong. Please do not think that this can only happen in
America, for this did not just occur in America; this happened in the
academic world, our world. Faculty members were murdered in the middle
of their lectures. Students were slaughtered while innocently attending
class. This tragedy happened in every school in the world. This tragedy
happened here.
Next week is midterms at HuaFan. Our lives go on, as they should. But when
you are getting tired from studying, when you cannot write another
essay, when the stress of exams becomes too much, please take a moment
and be thankful. Be thankful for the opportunity to take an exam; be
thankful for the opportunity to be in class; be thankful for the
opportunity to learn; be thankful for the opportunity to live. These
same opportunities were stolen from the 32 innocent murder victims at
Virginia Tech. They will never have these opportunities again.
On a personal note, this tragedy has opened my eyes to how lucky we are to
be here, to be part of HuaFan University and the academic community at
large. I will not take my luck for granted again.
To
my students, I say cherish your education. Use the incident at Virginia
Tech as a reminder as to how fleeting your time here is. You are being
given the gift of knowledge, perhaps the greatest gift of all. Please
don’t waste it. Get the most from your classes; take part in
activities; be a student, not just of HuaFan University, but also of
the world.
And always remember, no matter what happens, I love you all.
Sincerely,
Russell Scott Greene/QQ, Lecturer
Department of Foreign Languages & Literature
