原作者是在紐約州洋克市（紐約市布朗士區北郊）出生，具有德國血統的契普‧泰勒 (Chip Taylor) 。你大概不知道他是誰，不過，看到面孔後可能會有似曾相似的感覺，因為你一定認得他的家人。 契普‧泰勒的本名是詹姆士‧偓伊特 (James Voight)，他哥哥是大名鼎鼎的好萊塢巨星（1978年奧斯卡影帝）喬納森‧偓依特 (Jon Voight)，也就是世界天王巨星安潔琳娜‧裘莉 (Angelina Jolie Voight）的父親。 没錯，他是安潔琳娜的叔叔。

契普‧泰勒原本是要把這首歌交給著名的康妮‧法蘭西斯唱的，但是，康妮認為歌詞有一夜情的性暗示，會得罪保守歌迷，影响她自己的歌唱生涯，最後拒絕了。在1967年又交給依維‧姗慈錄製完成，没想到好事多磨，兩週後所屬的唱片公司居然破產，契普‧泰勒不禁為之氣結。陰錯陽差，幾個月後交給瑪瑞麗‧若許 和旋轉木馬合唱團（Merrilee Rush & the Turnabouts）錄製，在1968年6月獲得排行榜（Billboard 100）第七名，並獲得葛萊米獎提名為最佳當代流行女子歌手。

這首歌最高的排行榜排名是由鄉村音樂女歌手喬意斯‧牛頓（Juice Newton）在1981年4月奪得排行榜第四名，也同樣獲得葛萊米獎提名為最佳當代流行女子歌手，單曲熱賣一百萬張，在其他國家的銷售亦有亮麗的成績。

值得一提的是，1968年 是揺滾樂的黃金年代，高手輩出競争激烈。不要說別的，披頭四和滾石就經常有一二條歌佔住排行榜前十名。所以，瑪瑞麗‧若許 和旋轉木馬合唱團能得到排行榜第七名是非常的耀眼。而1981年是揺滾樂被迪斯可搞的元氣大傷之後，眾多音樂界人士紛紛掩旗息鼓，作品乏善可陳。在這種情況下，喬意斯‧牛頓得到第四名應該不是太困難。（參考 Wikipedia）

【版本/心語】共有八位歌手因唱它而擠入排行榜，唱過的有名歌手更是不勝枚舉，自1967年到2008年共有42種版本可供選聽，個人只喜歡其中三種版本。

我從來都鍾情於使歌曲成名的原唱者，因為就是他們的唱法給我感覺，才引起我的注意，也很少遇到有後續者表達的比原唱者好。一個特殊的例外是因為身體過重已上天國的IZ（Israel Kamakawiwo'ole ）在電影「生死戀（Meet Joe Black）」結尾以四弦琴（Ukulele）伴奏來唱Somewhere Over the Rainbow 和 What a Wonderful World.    聲音清新動人，我會永遠記得他（見後）。

契普‧泰勒 是鄉村西部作曲家， 他的版本（真正原版）充滿噯昧的呢喃（所以康妮不敢唱），西部吉他配上口琴、小提琴，略微帶有鄉村西部風味，没有精心安排的潤飾，感覺像是做完愛後依依不捨的起床吻別。契普雖然早在六十年代已譜曲填詞，一直等到2006年他才親自錄製，所以他的版本並不是當年的成名作，他的唱法也絕對擠不進排行榜。

本曲是由瑪瑞麗‧若許版本一舉成名，也是我的最愛。 略帶鼻音好似剛哭過，唱出一個享受過兩情缱綣，並不後悔一夜激情，毅然獨自承擔後果，依依不捨溫柔送別，道出一個堅強自主女子的寂寞心情，正確的詮釋了歌曲與歌詞的內含意境。樂曲安排用管樂器配上木吉他起頭，非常特出，更清楚的用吉他分解和弦伴奏，並鋪上好聽的連續兩段三連音橋段，很浪漫的襯托出內心的真情流露，又不得不面對現實。直問要得到真誠相愛心意交流，必須付出什麼樣的成長代價去擁有良人?

喬意斯‧牛頓版本把原版的一二吉他前奏小節改為三個電子鍵盤琴小節，再接回並淡化原版的吉他三四小節，兩者不搭調，略感平庸俗氣，居然把好聽的吉他伴奏給遮掩了，掻不到（我的）癢處。整體來說，音樂安排没有旋轉木馬合唱團安排的好，甚至伴奏部份到中後段（I  won’t beg you to stay with me…）有些連接音符好像似曾相識，實為敗筆。
