You can read the criticism section of K-pop on Wikipedia to see how westerners view K-pop,

  • Unoriginal, shallow character which copies and plagiarises Western music patterns
  • Strict training regime and "pre-packaging" of idol bands and songs for fast consumption
  • Heavy emphasis on visuals elements at the expense of musical sounds
  • Misuse of English words in its lyrics and "meaningless" song titles

You also can check out the demography of the K-pop fans in US and UK to see if they are influencing the mainstream Pop culture or not.

There are many articles online criticize K-pop some in very sarcastic tones, may fit-well into what you call "racism" realm. Please google the following k pop site:huffingtonpost.com Huffington Post is a famous and influential political website which is very representative of the caucacian-centered liberal views. Read to see what kind of languages they use to describe Psy, and other K pop stars and music.

History is about the past events, is it not?

A 20 years development is not a recent phenomenon.

H-mart is not a small grocery store chain. Currently it has 42 stores in North America. Some stores, square-footage waise, are as big as Safeway. It`s the largest Asian market in North America.

Pop culture is the best way to market a nation, more powerful than products. Korea has been doing that since the 90`s.  For example, Korean drama is widly available with English subtiltles.

Paragraph 3 is very closed to racism unfortunately.

Korea`s current success is not only that they stick together, but also relentlessly market their nation to the world. it took more 20 years to achieve.

History is about the past events. So past means dead, is that so? Your comments are insults to historians or history majored students. :)

Depends on your frame of reference, 20 years may be a long time ago, From the history point of view, which I thought you were talking about, 20 years is just a short while ago, especially as one considers 5000 years of history for human culture development.

You are right about H-Mart which is a big Asian supermarket chain outside California. H-Mart obviously expands following the Korean communities in North America avoiding the competition in California. H-Mart has only 4 stores in California compared to Ranch 99 which has more than 20. Thanks for the info.

However, I don't appreciate and certainly don't agree with you using "racism" to comment on my article. What I stated is the family history. You can verify it asking any oversea Chinese living in Korea in the from the lat 50's to the early 70's.

I also am not so positive you really know the differences between racism and nationalism. I asked you whether or not it's racism Korean only go to Korean shops to buy their needs. You didn't answer. You can check out how popular Japanese electronics and appliances are selling in Korea. Is that Korean's racism? Koreans actually radicule Taiwanese and Chinese about how they contradicted themselves by buying Japanese products while shouting against Japanese invasion and killings during WW2. Is that Korean "racism"?

As I said, "Korean people is not wiser, not more visionary than us, they are just more hard working, a lot more united, determined, and have much stronger self-esteem than us." They are very aggressive in establishing themselves in the world and they are pretty successful. If you feel that promotion of pop music would help in establishing the national esteem, feel free, I certainly, wouldn't go that way and go that far.

History is dead. Focus on the future please.

Ever been to H mart? Then you understand why Korea is rising. Don't fall in the trap of racism. Have you ever watch any Korean drama or so called K-pop? Korea has systematically promote themselves to the west for more 30 years! What about Taiwan? Still trapped in the past eh?

History is history, whether dead or not is your personal opinion. Which point of this article is not about the future? Which point of this article is about racism? Just curious.  Francis Bacon said "History makes men wise...." If you forget about it, well, ....

K-pop is just like the pop in Taiwan which is a much more recent phenomenon, whether promote to the west or not it is no comparison to Beetles, or Lady Gaga. In westerners' minds it's just an immitation for fun or sexy chicks for exploitation, not the classic pop culture. However, appliances, automobiles, cell phones, and etc. are much more invasive which have got into the daily life of western people. Korean products are now considered quality products and has successfully replaced Japanese products. That's where Taiwan has not been able to catch up or to establish, not so broadly at least.

H-mart is just a small grocery chain, compared to Ranch 99, and a couple of other oriental grocery chains at least in California, just so so. However, you should see that most Korean people in US only goes to H-mart for shopping once established, they don't go to any other grocery stores. Would you considered this as racism?

Korean people is not wiser, not more visionary than us, they are just more hard working, a lot more united, determined, and have much stronger self-esteem than us.
