Taiwan alone can sell disputed isles
Financial Times (London, England) | Friday, May 11, 2012 From Mr Charles I-Hsin Chen . Sir, Hiroyuki Kurihara, brother of the claimed owner of the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands, has told the Financial Times that his family has no idea how much money to charge the Tokyo administration for the sale because there is "no reference value" ("Japanese give Y76m to buy disputed isles", May 3). Here it is - a reference - £25m; but only the government of the Republic of China (the formal name for Taiwan) has the right to sell them. Besides abundant historical evidence to demonstrate Taiwan's traditional dominance over the Diaoyus, these isles were assigned to the district of I -lan County by the Taiwan government in January 1971, as well as being formally registered as under state ownership in April 2004. This property includes five tiny isles, of just 612.12 hectares in total, worth T$1,163,142,000 - equivalent to £24,747,702, according to the latest officially announced land value. It is not expensive compared with a luxury house in Tokyo, but it is priceless for Taiwan sovereignty. No sale, thanks!
