Case I –
At one of the Manager’s Meetings weeks ago (mid December 2010), the Manager encouraged members to move around within the company to learn more about our business, and/or to apply for Lead or Manager positions at other teams if available … to fulfill individual’s career goals. He then used him as the example: ”I came to the company as a senior programmer, moved up to be the Lead of a different team, and to here as the manager.” “Once there is no challenge for me,” he continued, “I will definitely consider to move to another team or department for more challenges.” There was silence for a while … maybe due to some mixed perceptions or interpretations of Manager’s message on this topic. To break the silence, I replied right away, “Don’t worry, XX (manger’s name), we can definitely help you by creating more challenges for you.” Everyone in the room was laughing, including the Manager. Case II - The day before yesterday (Saturday, 1/8/2011), I attended the trainings by TLI (Toastmasters Leadership Institute) at the GEICO building. The first 2 hours were the required training for Club Officers. As the President of the GEICO Toastmasters Club, I attended the one for President, led by Barry Piatt. From 11 to 1, there were a variety of topics on communications, leaderships, etc., which were open to anyone. I rushed to the one with a title of [Can’t I Say “Ain’t”? Exploiting Levels of Styles to Inform, Amuse, and Inspire] taught by Stanley Dambroski, Ph.D., ATMB/CL. The name looks familiar with me. Mmmm, yes, on 8/28/2010, I attended Stanley’s class entitled “Add Magic to your Words: Make Speeches Magical, Memorable, Quotable.” (TLI’s training as well) I loved it. Stanley is very knowledgeable in English writing, both article and speechwriting, even though his teaching was not perfect…mumble sometimes (but, no teacher is perfect.) I was looking forward to his class when I was at my officer’s training. As I rushed to the room, Stanley was asking attendees “any specific topics/interests you want to learn from this training.” As I stepped into the room, found a seat, sit down, and it was my turn right away. His question kind of caught me off the cuff.
