Awakening Hsu ChiCheng

You have finally awakened and thrown yourself into the radiance of hardships

You once said: “How hard it is to be a worker!”
You didn’t work hard and always wished
To change work the moment you saw something difficult
Today you have awakened and asked yourself:
“It is hard to be a worker, but it isn’t hard not to be a worker?”

Inside the radiance of hardships
The latent happiness in hardships
Begins to cheer and laugh round you
In the cheers and laughter, the night is fading away
You are getting strong-minded
Light is gradually opening her chest for you

The lamp of will is leading the way ahead for you
Perseverance is pushing you forward
So you “Work so hard as to forget to eat, feel so happy
As to forget sadness and never mind getting old.”
*1

You don’t hesitate any more under the sun
But work and think quietly
You keep in mind a golden saying: “Single-mindedness means fascination”(*2)
And have a great heart as Baizhang Master and Badhisattva have(*3)

Suddenly, rising, then awakening
You begin to tear the old house of corruption
And rebuild a new mansion(solid, beautiful and warm)
You have at last awakened and thrown yourself into the radiance of hardships

*1. “Work so hard as forget to eat, feel so happy as to forget sadness, and never mind getting old.”-quoted from The Analects.
*2. “Single-mindedness means fascination.”-quoted from Chuand-tzu
*3. Baizhang Master once took an oath: “I will neither work nor eat. “Budhisattva once took an oath: “I will never wish to be a Baddha unless there is no one left in the hell; and I will, with the heart of a Buddha, liberate all living beings from this moral world.”
