The Footmarks in the Sandy Beach    Hsu ChiCheng

That afternoon, in the sea-beach

I saw a long-haired man

Trying his best

To mark his footmarks

In the sandy beach...

What are you stepping?

I felt puzzled

So I asked him that way

What do you keep trampling?

I am marking my footmarks. He said

I want to have my footmarks left here.

He trampled again as he said

It’s no use.I said to him

This is sea-beach

Your footmarks will be drowned by the seatide

None of your footmarks will remain

When the sea tide comes.

I don’t think so.

He tried to mark another footmark

I must let my footmarks remain!

The sea tide came

His footmarks were all drowned

When it ebbed

He continued to mark his footmarks

In the sandy beach

Time never stop its steps

When dusk fell

I would go home and said to him

It’s no use. Let’s go home,my friend.

No. I won’t give up!

I will do it harder

I must let my footmarks remain!

He said while he marked

another footmark in the sandy beach...

The Second Genesis   An Anthology of Contemporary World Poetry  2014/5

And he did

He had footmarks everywhere

In his head in his memory

In his fairy tale to share with kid

Consciously or unconsciously, anyone is stepping, in anytime and anyplace, he marks his footmarks...
