Ready to butt-out and comply with the new laws?

菸害防治法新規定上路,癮君子準備好了嗎?

This month, you should have noticed some changes with regard to
cigarettes.

Taiwan has initiated strict new anti-smoking laws that will affect
where people smoke, how much cigarettes cost and how stores and
other establishments display and advertise tobacco products.

Smoking has long been prohibited at many public places, including
schools, inside buses, and public transport systems, but under the new
rules smoking is not permitted in any workplace that is used by three
or more people, and businesses may not promote or openly display
tobacco products.

The Department of Health (DOH) recently took the locally produced
blockbuster "Cape No. 7" to task, warning that movie-goers should not
imitate the film's scenes where characters smoke in an office, a hotel,
on a ship's deck or on the beach as all of these actions now constitute
violations.

The DOH explained that the deck of a boat is regarded as an "indoor
area" and reminded smokers visiting the beach that they must go to
designated smoking areas.

Those caught face fines ranging from NT$2,000 to NT$10,000.

While the new laws may at first inconvenience some, in the long run
we can all agree the health of Taiwan will improve as a result.
