Many people who were educated by Chiang's regime between 50s to 80s wish they can turn the clock back and live in that era because the current chaos of the political fight and the dramatic change of the society. Also they like the era Taiwanese, many of them thought they were Chinese not Taiwanese, and Chinese were not divided and hate each other. They think people were more polite and society was more stable in Chiang's regime. I was about 80% in the same situation as they were until the summer of 1972. One early morning in the summer vacation in 1972, my dad woke me up and told me to flee to my grandpa place serveral miles south because one grade school classmate of my 2nd sister was snatched the night before. He was a junior in a nearby college and came to talk to me couple weeks before the event. I was a naive and proud sophomore in the number one college. I trusted the media and believed my country was democratic and Chiang was a good leader so I did not escape and stayed at home. Then I went up north to my college to start the new semester of my junior year, but deep in my mind I started to doubt about the demorcracy of Chiang's regime. In the Christmas eve one classmate invited us, students from south, to have a tea party at his home. After the tea party, one classmate suddenly spoke that the country was in a very difficult situation (Taiwan was kicked out of UN) we must be loyal to the leader and the country. I responded that old Chiang was selfish to transfer power to his son. After the meeting, classmate Tsao asked me if I thought Chinese bullyed the Taiwanese. I did not know the difference between Taiwanese and Chinese because I did not know the 228 massacre in 1947, plus my mom is Chinese and my dad is Taiwanese so I did not answer him back. When I was senior, this classmate(曹壽民) and the other classmate Lee(李方屏), both are the 2nd generation of Chiang's ruling class, cooperated with on campus military officer to set me up, I failed in the military officer exam so I became a solider. In two years military service I was in a cell for one month, double punished than other teammates, because we took longer vacation than official allowed. Even before I came here to study my masters, one good Chinese friend of mine asked me if I dared to criticize the national leader. I answered him that the newspaper said people had the right to criticize the government so why not. After I read the true history of China and Taiwan in 80s and something happened to me when I was in University of Cincinnati. I finally realized that Chiang set up the spy system all over Taiwan and these two classmates were his spies(蒋家特務). My closest Chinese friend said what happened to me in Taiwan was my fate. I told him it's not a fate, it is racial and classic oppression from a totalitarian regime. In US people said I am 3 quarter Chinese and 1 quarter Taiwanese, but to the Chiang's ruling class and their young generation, I was a lower class Taiwanese civilian. P.S. The grade school classmate (鄭春潮)of my sister was sentenced to 5 years in prison without any legal process. He was released after three years. But he did not finish his college degree because KMT only allowed him to continue to study in a more expensive private college not his original cheap national college. His family was a poor farmer and could not afford it. One of the snatchers is now the exam minister of Ma's government. |
