１９６１年　Tony Hatch接下克拉克音樂製作人之責

但連續數首英語單曲沒打入排行榜

１９６４年秋天　Tony Hatch來到紐約打算為其製作的歌手尋求歌曲材料

當時他待的飯店在中央公園,──Hatch以為是處在紐約鬧區, 由於他喜歡彼處氛圍　便寫下［Downtown／鬧區］

據聞本來他想給英國女歌手Julie Grant唱, 被其婉拒

後來彈給佩圖拉──當時歌詞還未完成──她相當喜歡, 便成為首位灌錄此曲的藝人

［Downtown］被製作成一首流行味的軟調搖滾曲　有著類似搖滾樂團的管弦樂伴奏

一開始克拉克的英國唱片公司Rye不太感興趣, 認為它不夠英國化

但美國發行公司華納卻十分喜歡

於是［Downtown］被排定在１９６４年１１月發行

結果登上英國榜亞軍　結束佩圖拉兩年的單曲蕭條表現

單曲賣出五十萬張＋, 拿到金唱片

１９８８年以混音版［Downtown ‘88］發行, 又登上英國榜＃１０

國際表現相當成功：德國／加拿大／紐西蘭冠軍　澳洲／愛爾蘭亞軍  奧地利＃３　荷蘭＃４　挪威＃８　比利時＃１１

１９７６年　佩圖拉曾把其灌錄成迪斯可舞曲版

１９８８年以混音版［Downtown ‘88］發行, 又登上英國榜＃１０ 芬蘭＃１３

德國＃１３　愛爾蘭＃１４　澳洲＃６２

２０１１年愛爾蘭搖滾樂團The Saw Doctor重唱此曲, 並加入克拉克唱的幾句歌詞, 以The Saw Doctors featuring Petula Clark名義發行

登上愛爾蘭單曲榜亞軍

不過表現最好的則是美國

同樣在１１月發行　當時正值‘英國音樂入侵’期

［Downtown］在１９６５年１月下旬登上告示榜單曲后座　成為第二位拿下美國榜冠軍的英國女歌手

也是首名搖滾年代登上美國榜冠軍的英國女藝人

銷售突破一百萬張　拿到金唱片

並拿到葛萊美最佳搖滾歌曲

［Downtown］是佩圖拉首支打入美國榜的歌曲，讓３２歲的她在美國歌壇走紅, 接下來她有十五首歌曲登上當地Top４０

成為１９６０年代美國樂壇最成功的英國女歌手

［雖然在英國，她的聲勢被後起的達斯蒂．史賓菲爾德（Dusty Springfied）超越］

因為單曲成功　唱片公司趕緊籌備同名專輯［Downtown］, 在１９６５年初發行

登上美國榜＃２１──成為克拉克在當地最佳成績

在英國, 由於當時專輯榜只有Top２０, 並沒擠入
