１９８０年　美國迪斯可女王唐娜桑瑪（Donna Summer）跳槽Geffen唱片．

首張大碟［The Wanderer／流浪者］登上美國專輯榜＃１３　同名主打登上單曲榜＃３

皆拿到金唱片（專輯標準：５０萬張＋／單曲標準：１００萬張＋）

雖然成績不錯, 但卻沒有達到公司總裁David Geffen的期望

接下來唐娜與長期搭檔Giorgio Moroder&Pete Bellotte籌備下張雙片大碟［I’m A Rainbow］

但Geffen並不滿意這張專輯歌曲, 命令桑瑪改與當紅製作人昆西瓊斯（Quincy Jones）合作另一張唱片［Donna Summer］

唐娜說這是她錄製過程最艱辛的一張專輯：

一來她當時懷孕,　二來某些歌曲挑戰性頗高, 　三來她覺得昆西有些喧鬧與控制性.

［Donna Summer］是３３歲半的唐娜第十張原創大碟　１９８２年７月出版

這是１９７６年後桑瑪參與創作最少的錄音室專輯──卻是採用其他詞曲家最多的一張

樂風多元, 除以舞曲貫穿整張大碟外, 另有濃厚的靈魂曲風, 加上福音, 搖滾, 放克, 後迪斯可等

樂評中等, 並沒［The Wanderer］廣受讚譽

大碟只升到美國專輯榜＃２０

縱然依舊拿到金唱片（５０萬張＋）　國際表現也不差（英國＃１３　荷蘭＃９　日本＃２０）

首支主打［Love Is in Control（Finger on the Trigger）／愛在掌握中（手指在扳機上）］登上Billboard單曲榜＃１０　副榜──舞曲榜＃３　黑人榜＃４

１９８２年９月，唱片公司推出大碟第二單曲［State of Independence／獨立之國］［Geffen (U.S.)Warner Bros. (Europe)發行］

這是Jon and Vangelis為他們 1981 年的專輯《The Friends of Mr Cairo》錄製的歌曲，

歌詞是Jon Anderson為音樂即興創作，被認為是拜占庭風格的精神和振奮人心的。

昆西瓊斯製作成一首後迪斯可／靈魂／合成流行，律動感十足．

並邀來全明星組合擔任和聲而聞名，其中包括Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Michael Jackson, Brenda Russell, Christopher Cross, Dyan Cannon, James Ingram, Kenny Loggins, Peggy Lipton, Patti Austin, Michael McDonald, 和Stevie Wonder.
