１９８０年　美國迪斯可女王唐娜桑瑪（Donna Summer）跳槽Geffen唱片．

首張大碟［The Wanderer／流浪者］登上美國專輯榜＃１３ 　同名主打登上單曲榜＃３

皆拿到金唱片（專輯標準：５０萬張＋／單曲標準：１００萬張＋）

雖然成績不錯, 但卻沒有達到公司總裁David Geffen的期望

接下來唐娜與長期搭檔Giorgio Moroder&Pete Bellotte籌備下張雙片大碟［I’m A Rainbow］

但Geffen並不滿意這張專輯歌曲, 命令桑瑪改與當紅製作人昆西瓊斯（Quincy Jones）合作另一張唱片［Donna Summer］

唐娜說這是她錄製過程最艱辛的一張專輯：

一來她當時懷孕,　 二來某些歌曲挑戰性頗高, 　三來她覺得昆西有些喧鬧與控制性.

［Donna Summer］是３３歲半的唐娜第十張原創大碟　１９８２年７月出版

這是１９７６年後桑瑪參與創作最少的錄音室專輯──卻是採用其他詞曲家最多的一張

樂風多元, 除以舞曲貫穿整張大碟外, 另有濃厚的靈魂曲風, 加上福音, 搖滾, 放克, 後迪斯可等

樂評中等, 並沒［The Wanderer］廣受讚譽

大碟只升到美國專輯榜＃２０

縱然依舊拿到金唱片（５０萬張＋）　國際表現也不差（英國＃１３　荷蘭＃９　日本＃２０＃）

首支主打［Love Is in Control（Finger on the Trigger）／愛在掌握中（手指在扳機上）］登上Billboard單曲榜＃１０　副榜──舞曲榜＃３　黑人榜＃４

１９８３年２月，唱片公司在日本，比利時推出大碟第四單曲［Protection／保護］

這是搖滾巨星──‘工人皇帝’布魯斯·斯普林斯汀（Bruce Springsteen）為唐娜創作的歌曲

昆西瓊斯製作成一首流行搖滾，編曲熱鬧，桑瑪的詮釋從容．

在唐娜發行的版本中，斯普林斯汀演奏吉他獨奏，並且可以清楚地聽到淡出的人聲。

［Protection／保護］登上西班牙電台榜＃２６

雖然首單成功, 但接下來主打反應不盡理想, 導致［Donna Summer］專輯

仍無法達成David Geffen期望重現唐娜１９７０年代事業榮耀之願．

此後桑瑪在１９８０年代的事業便起伏不定．
