 Unit 1 “Sport and Fitness”

1.adjust (verb) 調適 to change something so it fits properly

2.altitude (noun) , 高度; 海拔 height above sea level

3.amputate【醫】切斷; 鋸掉; ()  To amputate part of the body means to cut it off in an operation.

4.association (n.) 協會, 公會, 社團[C] An association is an official group of people who have the same job, aim, or interest.

5.athlete (n.) 運動員, 體育家 An athlete is a person who does a sport, especially athletics, or track and field events.

6.attribute (v.) ...歸因於; ...歸咎於[(+to... ) to credit or say that something is responsible for a situation

7.automatic (adj.) 自動的 working by itself

8.award (v.) 給獎; 獎勵 to give something like a prize to someone

9.brand 商標; 牌子[(+of)] A brand usually refers to a type of product that is made by a certain company and is known by many people.

10.champion (n.) 冠軍 a winner of a contest or competition such as the Olympics

11.compliment (v.) 稱讚 If you compliment someone, you say something polite to them to show that you like their appearance, or approve of what they have done.

12.coordination (n.) 協調 Coordination means using the different parts of your body together efficiently. (root: ordinate)

13.data (plural n.) 資料, 數據(datum的複數) information, facts, or statistics that you can analyze

14.decade (n.)  十年 a period of ten years

15.differentiate (v.) 不同; 區別 to show dissimilarities between two things (root: different)

16.elite (n.) 精華; 精英; 優秀分子 People or organizations are considered to be the best of their kind.

17.enhance (v.) 加強; 改進 to make something better, to improve it

18.enormous (adj.) 巨大的, 龐大的 very large, huge

19.enthusiasm (n.) 熱心, 熱情, 熱忱[C][U][(+for/about)] great eagerness and excitement

20.frontier (n.)

國境, 邊境; 邊疆 (+between/with)] the border between two countries

探索活動的)新領域; 未完全開拓的領域 [(+of)]; the most advanced achievement in a particular field

21.generate (v.) 造成, 引起 to produce or cause something to begin

22.genetics (n.) (用作單)遺傳學 the study of how characteristics are inherited through genes

23.hemoglobin 血紅蛋白 the red substance in blood that carries oxygen around the body

24.hypoxia (n.) 【醫】組織缺氧  the lack of oxygen in your cells

25.immigrant (外來)移民, 僑民[C] An immigrant is a person who has come to live in a country from another country.

26.intense (adj.) 劇烈的; 極度的; 熱情的; 熱切的 very great in strength or degree

27.motion (n.) (物體的)運動, 移動  a body movement

28.oxygen (n.) 氧氣 a colorless gas in the air that people and animals need to live.

29.Paralympics 傷殘奧運[=para- + (O)LYMPICS](又名Wheelchair Olympics輪椅奧運)

30.prominent (adj.) 卓越的; 重要的; 著名的 Someone or something that is prominent is important and well-known.

31.prospect (n.) 可能性; 前景, 前途[P] the possibility or chance

32.psychological (adj.) 心理學的; 心理學家的 related to the human mind

33.version (n.) 版本 a form of something that differs somewhat from similar accounts
