German Ostfront and Freikorps Campaign
German Ostfront and Freikorps Campaign 1916 - 1919 Version 3.0

German Campaign: 1916-1919
Version: 1.0
Number of scenarios: 18
Longest path: 17
Campaign designer: Toliy, 03/2005
PeGWW1 conversion: Robert Mary, 05/2005

The German Freikorps were a new breed of the German army. They appeared in late 1918 as volunteer units both on the Eastern Front and at home. The distinguishing characteristic of these men from other military units of the Kaiserreich was their intense loyalty to Germany and love of combat.

After the Armistice, the Freikorps formed the backbone of the Reichswehr military. With the rise of Bolshevism in Russia, the Freikorps were sent -as part of a deal with the Entente- to contain the Reds in the Baltics. By this time, the ranks of the Freikorps included many Baltic Germans with family, feudal, and estate ties to the region.

As time progressed, the idealism of loyalty and combat turned into militant nationalism and brutality. The Freikorps terror in Latvia and Lithuania became just a note in a chord of human suffering at the hands of Whites, Letts, and Reds during the bloody 1919.

This campaign traces the development of the Freikorps during the latter conflicts with Russia in WWI, the Freikorps involvement in rebellions from Bulgaria to Finland, and their campaign in the Baltic region.

As Operation Frlingserwachen ran out of steam, the Soviets launched a massive counter offensive, the Vienna Operation, on March 15 1945. By March 20, the Wiking were almost completely encircled. The men of the Wiking division were saved by the sacrifice of the 9th SS Hohenstaufen, who managed, despite being bled white, to hold open a small corridor that allowed Wiking to escape. On March 24, another Soviet attack pushed the exhausted Wiking back towards Vienna. Any semblance of an organised line of defence was gone. The 5th SS Wiking then executed a fighting withdrawal into Czechoslovakia, and by early May, they were within reach of the American forces, to whom the division officially surrendered near Furstenfeld, Austria on May 9 1945....

The attack is held and center of war moves on closer to Japan. To make American divisions free for tasks elsewhere, Australian forces will take over the American perimeter on Bougainville. But they will not sit down and be idle. The Australians will launch offensives to reduce the Japanese power on Bougainville. The Japanese have four times as much soldiers on the island. Can you liberate Bougainville all the way up to Buka in the north and Buin in the south ?

Campaign designer: Jurgen Smet, 03/2005
PeGWW1 conversion: Robert Mary, 02/2007

The initial moves in WW1 were dictated by plans drawn up in the years before the war. The plan with the most impact on the war in the Western Europe was Germany's Schlieffen plan.

The 1905 plan developed by Count Alfred von Schlieffen, had the following key features:
- A bold and decisive 6 week initial move against France before Russia could mobilize.
- Violation of Dutch and Belgian neutrality as the strong German right wing swept westwards to enter France from its northern borders.
- A weak German left wing to contain the French on their eastern border in Lorraine.

Von Schlieffen's successor von Moltke made the plan less daring by not moving through Holland - which created a bottleneck near the city of Liege - and by strengthening the defensive left wing by taking away troops from the offensive right wing.

Your core forces are part of the offensive right wing moving into Belgium. Can you make von Moltke's plan work?

NB: This campaign will evolve as far as the author will draw up extra scenarios.

China warned American leaders through neutral diplomats that it would intervene to protect its national security.

On October 8, 1950, the day after American troops crossed the 38th parallel, Chairman Mao Zedong issued the order to assemble the Chinese People Volunteer Army. Seventy percent of the members of the PVA were Chinese regulars from the Chinese People Liberation Army. Mao ordered the army to move to the Yalu River, ready to cross. Mao sought Soviet aid and saw intervention as essentially defensive: f we allow the U.S. to occupy all of Korea?we must be prepared for the U.S. to declare?war with China,?he told Stalin.

The asian situation is not easy today, and the Chairman Mao needs men like you. Are you ready to deal with the capitalist powers?, or maybe your ambition will take you to bigger objectives?...

Korea has been in the hands of foreign powers for far too long. The Imperialist Japanese have been driven off our peninsula only to make room for capitalistic Americans - but only in the south. The people of North Korea have the full support from our comrades in the Soviet Union. They have supplied us with weapons, trucks, artillery, mortars, and their famous T-34 tanks! Now the time has to come to unite Korea under the communist banner and free the people of South Korea from their capitalistic oppressors!!!

Take Command of North Korean units from Seoul to the Naktong River. Fight at the Pusan Perimeter and retreat all the way across the peninsula when General MacArthur's troops land at Inch'on and threaten to cut you off. Once complete defeat looked like the only option and then the Chinese intervene and drive the United Nations troops south. Lead guerilla activity behind enemy lines while your force is being refitted. Then again command your units alongside our Chinese allies to try once more to liberate South Korea. In the summer of 1951 the major powers decide the fate of Korea by starting to negotiate a truce...

The 1st Infantry Division entered combat in World War II as part of "Operation Torch", the invasion of North Africa (from El Guettar up to Bizerte), the first American campaign against the Axis powers. The Division then moved on to take Sicily in "Operation Husky" (Gela on July 10, 1943, Troina and the straits of Messina). When that campaign was over, the division returned to England to prepare for the Normandy invasion. It was the division that stormed Omaha Beach on D-Day, some units suffering 30 percent casualties in the first hour, and secured Formigny and Caumont in the beachhead. The division followed up the St. Lo break-through with an attack on Marigny, 27 July 1944, and then drove across France in a continuous offensive, reaching the German border at Aachen in September. The division took the city after a direct assault, 21 October 1944. The First then attacked east of Aachen through Hurtgen Forest, driving to the Roer, and moved to a rest area 7 December for its first real rest in 6 months' combat, when the Wacht Am Rhein offensive (commonly called the Battle of the Bulge) suddenly broke loose, 16 December. The division raced to the Ardennes, and fighting continuously from 17 December 1944 to 28 January 1945, helped blunt and turn back the German offensive. Thereupon, the division attacked and again breached the Siegfried Line, fought across the Roer, 23 February 1945, and drove on to the Rhine, crossing at the Remagen bridgehead, 15 and 16 March 1945. The division broke out of the bridgehead, took part in the encirclement of the Ruhr Pocket, captured Paderborn, pushed through the Harz Mountains, and was in Czechoslovakia, when the war in Europe ended. Sixteen members of the division were awarded the Medal of Honor.

The birth of the Spanish Blue Division came as a desperate political
move to appease the Germans in a time were alliances in Europe meant
the disappearances and destruction of entire nations. The Blue Division volunteers were only destined to learn first hand the horrors of combat on the eastern front, far removed from the political games the Spanish government was playing.

On and off again, for a period of five years, the Soviet Union tried to realize it's dream of having the "hammer and sickle" fly permanently over Helsinki. Usually outnumbered, and having to partially rely on captured or donated equipment, the Finns proved to be one of the toughest and most resourceful soldiers of WW2...

This campaign is divided in three parts:

(a) Winter War: 30/11/1939 - 13/3/1940
The first one was the so-called "Winter War" from November 30, 1939 to March 13, 1940 which started after Finland refused to yield to demands made by the Soviet Union concerning areas of Finnish territory along the Finnish south-eastern border.
What really sealed Finlands destiny was the Ribbentrop pact made between Soviet Union and Nazi Germany and its secret (at that time) division of Europe into Soviet Unions and Germanys interest spheres.

(b) Continuation War: 25/6/1941 - 4/9/1944
When Germany attacked Soviet Union (Barbarossa) Finland allowed German troops to attack Soviet Union through Finland in the north (Germanys goal was to capture Murmansk). Finland did not declare war on Soviet Union and did not start hostilities until Soviet Union started bombing Finnish territory (cities) on morning of 25 June, 1941. As a result Finnish prime minister Rangell noted in a speech held at parliament that Finland is now at war with Soviet Union.

(c) Lapland War: 27/9/1944 - 27/4/1945
The third war is called the "Lapland War" and was fought against Germany after the armistice with the Soviet Union. Finland didn't really want to fight the germans but the pressure from Allies (mainly Soviet Union) was so great that the "war" escalated into a real fighting between the former allies in the northern Finland (Lapland). Last german troops were out of Finnish borders.

In December 1940, the first truly international division of the Waffen-SS was born. SS-Division (mot) Germania, (whose name was soon changed to SS-Division (mot) Wiking), was created around three motorised infantry regiments: Germania, formed mostly from ethnic Germans; Westland, consisting mainly of Dutch and Flemish volunteers; and Nordland, comprised mostly of Danes, Swedes and Norwegians. Command of the newly formed division was given to SS-Obergruppenfuhrer Felix Steiner, the brilliant former commander of the SS-VT's Deutschland Regiment. After its formation was complete, Wiking was sent to Truppen-Ubungsplatz Heuberg in Germany for training. By April 1941, Wiking was deemed combat-ready...

Hypothetical campaign

In 1941, the Red Army was the largest army in the world. Stalin may, as I said, not have planned to attack Germany in autumn 1941. But it would be hard to believe that he would not have taken the opportunity to stab Germany in the back sometime.

This campaign in no way presupposes to the throw fuel on the fire of the heated discussion of whether Stalin would or would not have attacked had not Germany attacked in World War Two. What this campaign does do, is to show armored warfare tactics from a Battalion to Corps scale.

In Hypothesis, the story goes after a heated arms race, Stalin takes the initiative and attacks on May first 1943...

In the War of the Sixth Coalition (1812?814), a coalition of Austria, Prussia, Russia, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and a number of German States finally defeated France and drove Napoleon Bonaparte into exile on Elba. After Napoleon's disastrous invasion of Russia, the continental powers joined Russia, Britain, and the rebels in Spain and Portugal. With their armies reorganized along more Napoleonic lines, they drove Napoleon out of Germany in 1813 and invaded France in 1814, forcing Napoleon to abdicate and restoring the Bourbons.

Two-and-a-half million troops fought in the conflict and the total dead amounted to as many as two million.

The final stage of the war, the defence of France, saw the French Emperor temporarily regain his former mastery, he repulsed vastly superior armies in the Six Days Campaign, which many believe to be the most brilliant feat of generalship of his illustrious career. Ultimately, Napoleon's earlier setbacks in Russia and Germany proved to be the seeds of his undoing, and the Allies occupied Paris, forcing his abdication.

In European history, the period 20 March?8 June 1815, marking the French emperor Napoleon's escape from imprisonment on Elba to his departure from Paris after losing the battle of Waterloo on 18 June.
The Napoleonic Wars ended following Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo (18 June 1815) and the Second Treaty of Paris.

In January 1814 the French army was again on home soil after the defeats of 1812 and 1813. 73,000 men were lost as a direct result of Leipzig and Napoleon was obliged to leave another 100,000 troops in garrisons in Germany. The classes of 1812 to 1815 were called up, theoretically producing 936,000 conscripts but evasions and lack of weapons meant only 310,000 raw untrained recruits joined the colours.

Both side aim in 1814 was Paris, the one to defend it, the other to capture it. However the Allies disharmonious policies meant all was not well with their plan of campaign:
* Britain was fully committed to forcing the Pyrenees this year and could apply no pressure elsewhere.
* The Russian Czar had his eye on the fall of Paris in revenge for the loss of Moscow in 1812 although his subordinates informed him that Mother Russia was now safe from further direct attack. Any more waste would be purely for the benefit of Austria, Prussia and Britain.
* The Austrian Emperor, advised by Metternich, was prepared to offer Napoleon terms. Most of Austria territory was recovered and she was wary of seeing any increase in power and influence of her old adversaries Prussia and Russia.
* The Prussian King was under the thrall of the Czar and wanted to agree his plans, but, following 1806 his people harboured a violent hatred of France and Napoleon in particular. His advisors emphasized that for the safety of his crown, the total destruction of Napoleon was essential.

While the talking continued, Napoleon worked like a demon to build up France defences.

Dupont's force had few veteran troops and as such was quite inadequate for the task. The French Revolutionary Wars were a series of major conflicts, from 1792 until 1802, fought between the French Revolutionary government and several European states. Marked by French revolutionary fervour and military innovations, the campaigns saw the French Revolutionary Armies defeat a number of opposing coalitions and expand French control to the Low Countries, Italy, and the Rhineland. The wars involved enormous numbers of soldiers, mainly due to the application of modern mass conscription.

The French Revolutionary Wars are usually divided between the First Coalition (1792?797) and the Second Coalition (1798?801), although France was also at war with Great Britain continuously from 1793 to 1802. Hostilities ceased with the Treaty of Amiens (1802).

The Napoleonic Wars were a series of conflicts involving Napoleon's French Empire and changing sets of European allies and opposing coalitions that ran from 1803 to 1815. French power rose quickly, conquering most of Europe, but collapsed rapidly after France's disastrous invasion of Russia in 1812. Napoleon's empire ultimately suffered complete military defeat resulting in the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in France. The wars resulted in the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire. Meanwhile the Spanish Empire began to unravel as French occupation of Spain weakened Spain's hold over its colonies, providing an opening for nationalist revolutions in Latin America. As a direct result of the Napoleonic wars the British Empire became the foremost world power for the next century.

While allies in name, France and Russia were never real friends.
Russia's economy was being hurt by Napoleon Bonaparte's Continental System that banned trade with Britain and internal pressures forced Tsar Alexander to turn a blind eye to those who broke it.
Bonaparte decided to bring the Russians back into line and gathered a Grande Armee of more than 500,000 men -including contingents from all France's allies to frighten them (the detached Austrian Corps of 34.000 under Schwarzenberg there were some 95.000 Poles, 90.000 Germans (24.000 Bavarians, 20.000 Saxons, 20.000 Prussians, 17.000 Westphalians and several thousand from smaller Rhineland states), 30.000 Italians, 25.000 Neapolitans, 12.000 Swiss, 4.800 Spanish, 3.500 Croats, and 2.000 Portuguese).
The implied threat did not work and the Tsar ordered two Russian armies to protect the Motherland. Napoleon had sent a final offer of peace to St. Petersburg shortly before commencing operations. He never received a reply, so he gave the order to proceed into Russian Poland.

On June 24, 1812, leaving behind more than 200.000 men on the border with Russia, the emperor advanced at the head of a 400.000 men army (the "Grande Arm嶪" amounted to 691.501 men, the largest army assembled up to that point in European history), crossed the river Niemen and headed towards Moscow. Are you up to the task, or it is time to give up your command ?

Two-and-a-half million troops fought in the conflict and the total dead amounted to as many as two million (Some estimates suggest that over a million died in Russia alone.) The War of the Sixth Coalition included the battles of Smolensk, Borodino, Lzen, Bautzen, Dresden and the epic Battle of Leipzig (also known as the Battle of Nations), which was the largest battle of the Napoleonic wars.

The war in 1813 was called by the Prussians, the War of Liberation. Public demonstrations in Prussia against the French persuaded the king of Prussia, Frederick William, to change sides. Austria declared war on France in August. The combined allied armies were nearly half million strong and were commanded by Bernadotte, Blher, Barclay de Tolly, Bennigsen, and Schwarzenberg. The Saxon Campaign in 1813 is one of the greatest Napoleonic Campaigns. It includes such battles like Lzen, Bautzen, Hanau, Dresden, and the mighty Battle of the Nations at Leipzig.

The Leibstandarte began its life as the 'SS-Stabswache Berlin', acting as bodyguards for the Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. It was the first armed SS formation and, by most measures, the most capable. Initially they were referred to contemptuously by the Heer regulars as the 'asphalt soldiers' for their obsessive spit and polish drill and purely ceremonial duties. After the campaigns in Poland and France, contempt gave way to geniune respect as the Leibstandarte earned a reputation as a combat unit which lived for the 'sheer beauty of the fighting'.

Welcome to Red Menace! This is a fictional campaign which takes place in early post war Europe. The basic premise is that international tensions regarding the division of Germany become explosive and minor border skirmishes between US and Russian forces erupts into a full scale Soviet invasion. The campaign takes the US commander from trying to resist the initial Soviet advances to taking the initiative and forcing the Russins all way back to Red Square.

This campaign was designed for experts and is not for the faint at heart. There are 22 scenarios and I would say the difficulty level varies from challenging to extremely difficult. I tried to make it very challenging because so many campaigns are just too easy and rapidly become boring. If you find it too difficult try playing it at 150 prestige. Good luck Commander!

1939-1946

After a few training scenarios in Georgia and Alaska against British,
French and Japanese forces starting in 1939 before the real shooting
war gets under way, you get to command your own units against the
Germans (and, at various times, the Vichy French, the Soviets, Italians
and the Japanese) from 1941 to 1946. You'll be dealing with a variety of
new equipment. You'll start out with very light units and no aircraft in
1939. Your best units will be lowly GMC M-3 anti-tank units and garden
variety artillery. But by the time you have finished, you may have some of
the best equipment in the world including, artillery that can shoot seven
hexes, and bombers that have the enemy abandoning their hardware on
sight, and much more. But your enemy will have some interesting
equipment as well. You will have to build a well-balanced core force to
succeed.

This should be a lot of fun for anyone enjoying a well-researched
campaign designed by a historian who is also a Panzer General buff.
The campaign involves realistic scenarios along with plausible "what if"
scenarios for 1946 along with training scenarios and a few surprises,
such as an all-out assault of Malta, a chance to liberate Greece, and
more, along the way. This campaign also has realistic force levels so
that you don't find yourself fighting hundreds of units of Tiger tanks in a
battle that you know had only 20. There are also different versions of
several battles.

June 7 - June 8, 1967 (historical line)

Following numerous border clashes between Israel and its Arab neighbors, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser expelled the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) from the Sinai Peninsula in May 1967.

On June 5, 1967, the Six Day War begins when Israel launched a bombing raid on Egyptian airfields. Initially it told the UN that Egypt had attacked first, but later described the strikes as preemptive. Egypt denied planning to attack Israel, and asserted that Israel's strike was not preemptive but an unwarranted and illegal act of aggression.

On June 8th, Israel had completed the capture of the Sinai.

On June 9th, Egypt counterattacked.

October 6, 1973 - October 29, 1973 (historical line)
October 6, 1973 - February 24, 1991 (non historical line)

The Arab countries try to get revenge after the Six Days War...

This war was so called because the Israeli forces were taken by surprise on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), a Jewish holy day. In recognition of their failures since 1948 Egypt and Syria chose to start the war on the day when the Israelis would be at their most vulnerable, as the whole country effectively shuts down for the 24 hours of Yom Kippur. It started with the crossing of the Suez Canal by Egyptian forces, who made initial gains, though, in the face of Israeli counter-attacks, there was some later loss of ground by the Syrians in the north. The war had 19.000 casualties, and also led to a shift of certain sectors of international opinion against Israel.

The campaign offers a short (historical) path -ending in 1973- and a long (non historical) path -ending in 1991-. The "what if" path includes alternative scenarios in 1973 but also thirteen scenarios taking place after the Yom Kippur War, leading the player to Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Israel and Kuwait.

The Est German gouvernment has decided to build a wall between East and West Germany in order to stop the escape of thousands of people each year to West Germany leading to the economical collapse of East Germany.
It is now clear that communism does not bring happiness and only a totalitarian regime can keep its population by force into its border.

The Bundeswehr will intervene -without the framework of NATO- against the 'Nationale Volksarmee der DDR' (East German National People Army) in order to save the East German people from tyranny, this will be a war limited to Germany, we do not intend to wage a war against Soviet Union or even less to the whole Warsaw Pact.

You must avoid that this intra-German operation leads to a NATO-Warsaw Pact confrontation with a risk of nuclear retaliation, only a successful 'Blitzkrieg' will put USSR to the negotiation table.

OK this scenario was apparently too difficult for your skills.
Let's play another one where you will have more units at your disposal and a weaker computer opponent!

You will be sent to another air scenario also originally designed by Michael Nowak but modified by Robert Mary.

Operation Clean Heaven - September 16th, 1961

May I introduce Berlin ?
This is the biggest stronghold the world has ever seen.
In order to capture the city we need to weaken the enemy airforce first. Destroy every air defense unit you can find and the airfields so that Soviet and other Warsaw Pact Allies could be prevented from refueling and repairing their jets.

NB:
(1) You can only deploy air units from your CORE forces
(2) If you are here this means you failed to win the original air scenario designed by Michael Nowak or you got only a TV or a loss after Rostock. This is a scenario also originally designed by Michael Nowak but modified by Robert Mary. The player gets a stronger air power and the computer has a weaker defense.

Tovarich Commander,

We cannot let the West-German provocations unpunished!
They seek for revenge after WW2. This is what we shall tell to our troops...

It is high time to re-unify Germany and why not to build Europe "from the Atlantic to the Ural" with a unique money: the rouble.

Western powers are weak, due to a huge economical crisis comparable to 1929 they cut their military defense expenses in half. It is the moment to achieve the dream of Comrade Stalin, the Little Father of People... Our 'Perestroika' was a masquerade to put NATO to sleep.

We do not expect a military reaction from China but we keep divisions at our border.

You will moved to Central Germany, you will be helped by East German units, Polish units securing your logistics. From there -and depending on the behaviour of the French Governement towards our peace proposals- you could even be allowed to move to Paris!

Your opponents will be firstly American and West German units helped by other minor NATO countries. The French army will not be a problem after the collapse of Western Germany.

Our superior military power associated with the temporary vulnerability window of NATO (loss of technological advance and huge economical crisis in background) offers us a unique opportunity to create a communist Europe from the Atlantic to the Ural.

We have understood the call of Western workers and peasants, we shall liberate them from salvation organized by their capitalistic masters under the pretext of so-called "Free Market" led by European Union dismantling all parts of the public sector...

You will move to Northern Germany, you will be helped by East German units, Polish units securing your logistics. Simultaneously you will assault Denmark and take by surprise Iceland in order to reduce the supply of Americans.

If Sweden defends too heavily its neutrality we shall force the country to listen to our legitimate requests...

Your opponents will be firstly British and West German units helped by other minor NATO countries. Your utlimate goal is Antwerp, an important harbour, this would cut most of NATO supply lines and force Great Britain to sit at the negociation table. At this time our divisions on the Central Front should have taken Paris!

The Est German government has decided to build a wall between East and West Germany in order to stop the escape of thousands of people each year to West Germany leading to the economical collapse of East Germany.

You must avoid that this intra-German operation leads to a NATO-Warsaw Pact confrontation with a risk of nuclear retaliation, only a successful 'Blitzkrieg' will put USSR at the negotiation table.

Commander,

'Peacekeeping, as defined by the United Nations, is a way to help countries -torn by conflict- to create conditions for sustainable peace. The Charter of the United Nations gives the Security Council the power and responsibility to take collective action to maintain international peace and security. For this reason, the international community usually looks to the Security Council to authorize peacekeeping operations. Most of these operations are established and implemented by the United Nations itself with troops serving under UN operational command'.

Following a gas conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Russian President Putin has cut the gas supply to Ukraine and has also launched small detachment troops to occupy Kiev and force Ukrainian President to resign in order to create a puppet state.

The UN council has decided to defend Ukraine at all costs and you are in charge of protecting the Ukrainian border. No offensive operation against Russia will be allowed!!!

Your role is to arrive there on time to prevent a war between those two states and to force Russia to find a negotiated solution instead of being tempted to use the force at a larger scale.

Fulda Breakout - March 18th, 1981

Cold War tensions between Western and Eastern blocks have finally exploded. The Fulda Gap defenses have been collapsed by the overwelming advance of the Soviet 8th Guards Army aided by the GDR forces. Now, the last place to stop the Warsaw Pact's forces are the outskirts of the important West German city of Frankfurt am Main, also a major trade center of the CEE. Meanwhile, the NATO is preparing an armed response to the soviet agression... with the nuclear menace behind.

Victory Conditions: NATO High Command wants to hold on at least 11 victory objectives for 16 turns. If you manage to hold more than 11 objectives, it will be considered as a Victory (13 VHs) or even as a Brilliant Victory (16 VHs).

Fulda Breakout (Part 2) - August 7th, 1985

Four years after the previous war Western powers thought democracy was installed in USSR but another dictatorship has arisen...

The 8th Guards Army has crossed the border and pushed the 11th ACR back past Fulda and are holding on the east flank. The 5th Panzer Division is moving into position on the west flank. The 3rd Armored Division must hold in place for at least 3 days.

Pakistan intervened by force in Bangladesh taking pretext of economical difficulties and existence of pro-Pakistani groups willing to overthrow the Bengladesh regime in order to reunite the country.

The Pakistani ambassador left a note by which his country considers the conditions which led to the creation of Bangladesh in 1971 are not existing anymore but considers our peace agreement is still valid provided India does not intervene.

The peace agreements after the 1971 war led to the creation of Bengladesh are now clearly broken unilateraly. Of course our treaty with Bengladesh forces us to intervene to defend the oppressed population...

We won in 1971 (with the indirect support of Russia), we shall win this one again! --- if USA or China do not directly intervene ---

Maybe our claims at the United Nations will be heard and will bring some military support...

The American Revolutionary War (1775?783), the American War of Independence, or simply the Revolutionary War in the United States, began as a war between the Kingdom of Great Britain and the United States of America, but gradually grew into a world war between Britain on one side and the United States, France, Netherlands and Spain on the other. The main result was an American victory, with mixed results for the other powers.

Seeking to coordinate military efforts, the Continental Congress established (on paper) a regular army on June 14, 1775, and appointed George Washington as commander-in-chief...

In London, as political support for the war plummeted after Yorktown, British Prime Minister Lord North resigned in March 1782. In April 1782, the Commons voted to end the war in America. The formal end of the war did not occur until the Treaty of Paris (for the U.S.) and the Treaties of Versailles (for the other Allies) were signed on September 3, 1783. The United States Congress of the Confederation ratified the Paris treaty on January 14, 1784.

The Eastern Theater included the campaigns that are generally most famous in the history of the war, if not for their strategic significance, but for their proximity to the large population centers, the major newspapers, and the capital cities of the opposing parties. The imaginations of both Northerners and Southerners were captured by the epic struggles between the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, under Robert E. Lee, and the Union Army of the Potomac, under a series of less successful commanders. The bloodiest battle of the war (Gettysburg) and the bloodiest single day of the war (Antietam) were both fought in this theater. The capitals of Washington, D.C., and Richmond were both attacked or besieged. It has been argued that the Western Theater was more strategically important in defeating the Confederacy, but it is inconceivable that the civilian populations of both sides could have considered the war to be at an end without the resolution of Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse in 1865... The war produced about 970,000 casualties (3% of the population), including about 620,000 soldier deaths-two-thirds by disease. The war accounted for more casualties than all other U.S. wars combined.

Historical stats:
Union: 2,200,000 soldiers, 360,000 dead (110,000 KIA) and 275,200 wounded
Confederacy: 1,064,000 soldiers, 258,000 dead (93,000 KIA) and 137,000 wounded

The Red River Campaign or Red River Expedition consisted of a series of battles fought along the Red River in Louisiana during the American Civil War from March 10 to May 22, 1864. The campaign was a Union initiative, fought between the 30,000 Union troops under the command of Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks, and Confederate troops under the command of Lt. Gen. Richard Taylor, whose strength varied from 6,000 to 12,000.

The Union had three goals at the start of the campaign:

1. To destroy the Confederate Army commanded by Taylor.
2. To capture Shreveport, Louisiana, Confederate headquarters for the Trans-Mississippi Department, control the Red River to the north, and occupy east Texas.
3. To confiscate as much as a hundred thousand bales of cotton from the plantations along the Red River.

This campaign does not only cover Bank's Red River campaign but also Sturgis' operations in Mississippi and Steele's Arkansas campaign, all taking place in 1864.

Brigade command (consisting of the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 27th, and 33rd Virginia Infantry regiments) at First Manassas leads to Divisional command in the Valley. By the Peninsula Campaign it is a group of divisions; for the return to Manassas and beyond it is Corps command.

E-file: ACW e-file v. 1.01c December 2008

Historical background:
The capture of Confederate diplomats -commissioners to represent Confederate interests abroad, Mason in England and Slidell in France- from a British passenger ship (RSM Trent) by an American warship (USS San Jacinto)and the behaviour of Unionists regarding the willingness to free those diplomats or not was a great moment of tension (the "Trent Affair" in late 1861) between the Union and Great Britain. The mere notion that Americans could halt a British ship on the high seas and remove lawful passengers was intolerable. Eleven thousand regular troops were sent to Canada, the British fleet was put on a war footing, and a sharp note was dispatched to the United States, demanding surrender of the prisoners and a prompt apology.

Alternate history:
Prisoners were not liberated and no apology was given consequently Confederacy had been recognized by the Empire. The decision to go to war came after the impressive list of Confederate victories in 1862 and the willingness to safeguard commercial activities with America (especially cotton trade).

Expect Union attack on Canada. The plan is to strike back from there while the Confederates will head northwards.

The sole question is: what will be the attitude of Napoleon III ?
Let's hope that French policy in Mexican Republic will not ruin our efforts.

Queen Victoria is watching you, failure is not an option!

Union campaign 1862-1865

Campaign designers: Robert Mary and Starbuck, 21/05/2008
E-file: ACW e-file v. 1.01c December 2008

The Western Theater was an area defined by both geography and the sequence of campaigning. It originally represented the area east of the Mississippi River and west of the Appalachian Mountains. It excluded operations against the Gulf Coast and the Eastern Seaboard, but as the war progressed and William Tecumseh Sherman's Union armies moved southeast from Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1864 and 1865, the definition of the theater expanded to encompass their operations in Georgia and the Carolinas.

The West was by some measures the most important theater of the war. The Confederacy was forced to defend with limited resources an enormous land mass, which was subject to Union thrusts along multiple avenues of approach, including major rivers that led directly to the agricultural heartland of the South. Capture of the Mississippi River was one of the key tenets of Union General Winfield Scott's Anaconda Plan. Military historian J. F. C. Fuller has described this as an immense turning movement, a left wheel that started in Kentucky, headed south down the Mississippi River, and then east through Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

The Eastern Theater received considerably more attention than the Western, both at the time and in historical accounts. This is related to the proximity of the opposing capitals, the concentration of newspapers in the major cities of the East, and the fame of Eastern generals such as Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson.
