German Ostfront and Freikorps Campaign
German Ostfront and Freikorps Campaign 1916 - 1919 Version 3.0

German Campaign: 1916-1919
Version: 1.0
Number of scenarios: 18
Longest path: 17
Campaign designer: Toliy, 03/2005
PeGWW1 conversion: Robert Mary, 05/2005

The German Freikorps were a new breed of the German army. They appeared in late 1918 as volunteer units both on the Eastern Front and at home. The distinguishing characteristic of these men from other military units of the Kaiserreich was their intense loyalty to Germany and love of combat.

After the Armistice, the Freikorps formed the backbone of the Reichswehr military. With the rise of Bolshevism in Russia, the Freikorps were sent -as part of a deal with the Entente- to contain the Reds in the Baltics. By this time, the ranks of the Freikorps included many Baltic Germans with family, feudal, and estate ties to the region.

As time progressed, the idealism of loyalty and combat turned into militant nationalism and brutality. The Freikorps terror in Latvia and Lithuania became just a note in a chord of human suffering at the hands of Whites, Letts, and Reds during the bloody 1919.

This campaign traces the development of the Freikorps during the latter conflicts with Russia in WWI, the Freikorps involvement in rebellions from Bulgaria to Finland, and their campaign in the Baltic region.

The initial moves in WW1 were dictated by plans drawn up in the years before the war. The plan with the most impact on the war in the Western Europe was Germany's Schlieffen plan.

The 1905 plan developed by Count Alfred von Schlieffen, had the following key features:
- A bold and decisive 6 week initial move against France before Russia could mobilize.
- Violation of Dutch and Belgian neutrality as the strong German right wing swept westwards to enter France from its northern borders.
- A weak German left wing to contain the French on their eastern border in Lorraine.

Von Schlieffen's successor von Moltke made the plan less daring by not moving through Holland - which created a bottleneck near the city of Liege - and by strengthening the defensive left wing by taking away troops from the offensive right wing.

Your core forces are part of the offensive right wing moving into Belgium. Can you make von Moltke's plan work?

NB: This campaign will evolve as far as the author will draw up extra scenarios.

The 1st Infantry Division entered combat in World War II as part of "Operation Torch", the invasion of North Africa (from El Guettar up to Bizerte), the first American campaign against the Axis powers. The Division then moved on to take Sicily in "Operation Husky" (Gela on July 10, 1943, Troina and the straits of Messina). When that campaign was over, the division returned to England to prepare for the Normandy invasion. It was the division that stormed Omaha Beach on D-Day, some units suffering 30 percent casualties in the first hour, and secured Formigny and Caumont in the beachhead. The division followed up the St. Lo break-through with an attack on Marigny, 27 July 1944, and then drove across France in a continuous offensive, reaching the German border at Aachen in September. The division took the city after a direct assault, 21 October 1944. The First then attacked east of Aachen through Hurtgen Forest, driving to the Roer, and moved to a rest area 7 December for its first real rest in 6 months' combat, when the Wacht Am Rhein offensive (commonly called the Battle of the Bulge) suddenly broke loose, 16 December. The division raced to the Ardennes, and fighting continuously from 17 December 1944 to 28 January 1945, helped blunt and turn back the German offensive. Thereupon, the division attacked and again breached the Siegfried Line, fought across the Roer, 23 February 1945, and drove on to the Rhine, crossing at the Remagen bridgehead, 15 and 16 March 1945. The division broke out of the bridgehead, took part in the encirclement of the Ruhr Pocket, captured Paderborn, pushed through the Harz Mountains, and was in Czechoslovakia, when the war in Europe ended. Sixteen members of the division were awarded the Medal of Honor.

October 1941 - ????

The birth of the Spanish Blue Division came as a desperate political
move to appease the Germans in a time were alliances in Europe meant
the disappearances and destruction of entire nations. The Blue Division volunteers were only destined to learn first hand the horrors of combat on the eastern front, far removed from the political games the Spanish government was playing.
Could you take the Division Azul to the victory in Russia?

On November 30th 1939,the Soviet Union set into motion a series of events that would test Finnish national strength and resolve to the limits. On and off again, for a period of five years, the Soviet Union tried to realize it's dream of having the "hammer and sickle" fly permanently over Helsinki. Usually outnumbered, and having to partially rely on captured or donated equipment, the Finns proved to be one of the toughest and most resourceful soldiers of WW2...

This campaign is divided in three parts:

(a) Winter War: 30/11/1939 - 13/3/1940
The first one was the so-called "Winter War" from November 30, 1939 to March 13, 1940 which started after Finland refused to yield to demands made by the Soviet Union concerning areas of Finnish territory along the Finnish south-eastern border.
What really sealed Finlands destiny was the Ribbentrop pact made between Soviet Union and Nazi Germany and its secret (at that time) division of Europe into Soviet Unions and Germanys interest spheres.

(b) Continuation War: 25/6/1941 - 4/9/1944
When Germany attacked Soviet Union (Barbarossa) Finland allowed German troops to attack Soviet Union through Finland in the north (Germanys goal was to capture Murmansk). Finland did not declare war on Soviet Union and did not start hostilities until Soviet Union started bombing Finnish territory (cities) on morning of 25 June, 1941. As a result Finnish prime minister Rangell noted in a speech held at parliament that Finland is now at war with Soviet Union.

(c) Lapland War: 27/9/1944 - 27/4/1945
The third war is called the "Lapland War" and was fought against Germany after the armistice with the Soviet Union. Finland didn't really want to fight the germans but the pressure from Allies (mainly Soviet Union) was so great that the "war" escalated into a real fighting between the former allies in the northern Finland (Lapland). Last german troops were out of Finnish borders.

In December 1940, the first truly international division of the Waffen-SS was born. SS-Division (mot) Germania, (whose name was soon changed to SS-Division (mot) Wiking), was created around three motorised infantry regiments: Germania, formed mostly from ethnic Germans; Westland, consisting mainly of Dutch and Flemish volunteers; and Nordland, comprised mostly of Danes, Swedes and Norwegians. Command of the newly formed division was given to SS-Obergruppenfuhrer Felix Steiner, the brilliant former commander of the SS-VT's Deutschland Regiment. After its formation was complete, Wiking was sent to Truppen-Ubungsplatz Heuberg in Germany for training. By April 1941, Wiking was deemed combat-ready...

It is war since 4 years.
I thought there would be nothing to report, the days were uneventful. But, specifically there, in the largest seclusion of Russia I met the war.

I have seen the human chasms of the war.
The German troops were retreating after their alleged victory in Moscow. I saw the German soldiers and the Russian prisoners through the snow-covered landscape fighting to the West.

The first night in the snow was very cold, but we were safe. Not much time, then, to figure out which type of warfare we would expect.

Welcome to the "walhalla" campaign.

Hypothetical campaign

In 1941, the Red Army was the largest army in the world. Stalin may, as I said, not have planned to attack Germany in autumn 1941. But it would be hard to believe that he would not have taken the opportunity to stab Germany in the back sometime.

This campaign in no way presupposes to the throw fuel on the fire of the heated discussion of whether Stalin would or would not have attacked had not Germany attacked in World War Two. What this campaign does do, is to show armored warfare tactics from a Battalion to Corps scale.

In Hypothesis, the story goes after a heated arms race, Stalin takes the initiative and attacks on May first 1943...

The Leibstandarte began its life as the 'SS-Stabswache Berlin', acting as bodyguards for the Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. It was the first armed SS formation and, by most measures, the most capable. Initially they were referred to contemptuously by the Heer regulars as the 'asphalt soldiers' for their obsessive spit and polish drill and purely ceremonial duties. After the campaigns in Poland and France, contempt gave way to geniune respect as the Leibstandarte earned a reputation as a combat unit which lived for the 'sheer beauty of the fighting'.

1939-1946

After a few training scenarios in Georgia and Alaska against British,
French and Japanese forces starting in 1939 before the real shooting
war gets under way, you get to command your own units against the
Germans (and, at various times, the Vichy French, the Soviets, Italians
and the Japanese) from 1941 to 1946. You'll be dealing with a variety of
new equipment. You'll start out with very light units and no aircraft in
1939. Your best units will be lowly GMC M-3 anti-tank units and garden
variety artillery. But by the time you have finished, you may have some of
the best equipment in the world including, artillery that can shoot seven
hexes, and bombers that have the enemy abandoning their hardware on
sight, and much more. But your enemy will have some interesting
equipment as well. You will have to build a well-balanced core force to
succeed.

This should be a lot of fun for anyone enjoying a well-researched
campaign designed by a historian who is also a Panzer General buff.
The campaign involves realistic scenarios along with plausible "what if"
scenarios for 1946 along with training scenarios and a few surprises,
such as an all-out assault of Malta, a chance to liberate Greece, and
more, along the way. This campaign also has realistic force levels so
that you don't find yourself fighting hundreds of units of Tiger tanks in a
battle that you know had only 20. There are also different versions of
several battles.

October 6, 1973 - February 24, 1991 (non historical line)

The Arab countries try to get revenge after the Six Days War...

This war was so called because the Israeli forces were taken by surprise on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), a Jewish holy day. In recognition of their failures since 1948 Egypt and Syria chose to start the war on the day when the Israelis would be at their most vulnerable, as the whole country effectively shuts down for the 24 hours of Yom Kippur. It started with the crossing of the Suez Canal by Egyptian forces, who made initial gains, though, in the face of Israeli counter-attacks, there was some later loss of ground by the Syrians in the north. The war had 19.000 casualties, and also led to a shift of certain sectors of international opinion against Israel.

The campaign offers a short (historical) path -ending in 1973- and a long (non historical) path -ending in 1991-. The "what if" path includes alternative scenarios in 1973 but also thirteen scenarios taking place after the Yom Kippur War, leading the player to Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Israel and Kuwait.

Tovarich Commander,

We cannot let the West-German provocations unpunished!
They seek for revenge after WW2. This is what we shall tell to our troops...

It is high time to re-unify Germany and why not to build Europe "from the Atlantic to the Ural" with a unique money: the rouble.

Western powers are weak, due to a huge economical crisis comparable to 1929 they cut their military defense expenses in half. It is the moment to achieve the dream of Comrade Stalin, the Little Father of People... Our 'Perestroika' was a masquerade to put NATO to sleep.

We do not expect a military reaction from China but we keep divisions at our border.

You will moved to Central Germany, you will be helped by East German units, Polish units securing your logistics. From there -and depending on the behaviour of the French Governement towards our peace proposals- you could even be allowed to move to Paris!

Your opponents will be firstly American and West German units helped by other minor NATO countries. The French army will not be a problem after the collapse of Western Germany.

Tovarich Commander,

Our superior military power associated with the temporary vulnerability window of NATO (loss of technological advance and huge economical crisis in background) offers us a unique opportunity to create a communist Europe from the Atlantic to the Ural.

We have understood the call of Western workers and peasants, we shall liberate them from salvation organized by their capitalistic masters under the pretext of so-called "Free Market" led by European Union dismantling all parts of the public sector...

You will move to Northern Germany, you will be helped by East German units, Polish units securing your logistics. Simultaneously you will assault Denmark and take by surprise Iceland in order to reduce the supply of Americans.

If Sweden defends too heavily its neutrality we shall force the country to listen to our legitimate requests...

Your opponents will be firstly British and West German units helped by other minor NATO countries. Your utlimate goal is Antwerp, an important harbour, this would cut most of NATO supply lines and force Great Britain to sit at the negociation table. At this time our divisions on the Central Front should have taken Paris!

Commander,

'Peacekeeping, as defined by the United Nations, is a way to help countries -torn by conflict- to create conditions for sustainable peace. The Charter of the United Nations gives the Security Council the power and responsibility to take collective action to maintain international peace and security. For this reason, the international community usually looks to the Security Council to authorize peacekeeping operations. Most of these operations are established and implemented by the United Nations itself with troops serving under UN operational command'.

Following a gas conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Russian President Putin has cut the gas supply to Ukraine and has also launched small detachment troops to occupy Kiev and force Ukrainian President to resign in order to create a puppet state.

The UN council has decided to defend Ukraine at all costs and you are in charge of protecting the Ukrainian border. No offensive operation against Russia will be allowed!!!

Your role is to arrive there on time to prevent a war between those two states and to force Russia to find a negotiated solution instead of being tempted to use the force at a larger scale.

Pakistan intervened by force in Bangladesh taking pretext of economical difficulties and existence of pro-Pakistani groups willing to overthrow the Bengladesh regime in order to reunite the country.

The Pakistani ambassador left a note by which his country considers the conditions which led to the creation of Bangladesh in 1971 are not existing anymore but considers our peace agreement is still valid provided India does not intervene.

The peace agreements after the 1971 war led to the creation of Bengladesh are now clearly broken unilateraly. Of course our treaty with Bengladesh forces us to intervene to defend the oppressed population...

We won in 1971 (with the indirect support of Russia), we shall win this one again! --- if USA or China do not directly intervene ---

Maybe our claims at the United Nations will be heard and will bring some military support...

Union Jack Forever
British Campaign 1862-1865

Version: 1.0
Number of scenarios: 12
Longest path: 12
Campaign designers: Robert Mary, 07/12/2008
E-file: ACW e-file v. 1.01c December 2008

Historical background:
The capture of Confederate diplomats -commissioners to represent Confederate interests abroad, Mason in England and Slidell in France- from a British passenger ship (RSM Trent) by an American warship (USS San Jacinto)and the behaviour of Unionists regarding the willingness to free those diplomats or not was a great moment of tension (the "Trent Affair" in late 1861) between the Union and Great Britain. The mere notion that Americans could halt a British ship on the high seas and remove lawful passengers was intolerable. Eleven thousand regular troops were sent to Canada, the British fleet was put on a war footing, and a sharp note was dispatched to the United States, demanding surrender of the prisoners and a prompt apology.

Alternate history:
Prisoners were not liberated and no apology was given consequently Confederacy had been recognized by the Empire. The decision to go to war came after the impressive list of Confederate victories in 1862 and the willingness to safeguard commercial activities with America (especially cotton trade).

Expect Union attack on Canada. The plan is to strike back from there while the Confederates will head northwards.

The sole question is: what will be the attitude of Napoleon III ?
Let's hope that French policy in Mexican Republic will not ruin our efforts.

Queen Victoria is watching you, failure is not an option!

From Shiloh to Savannah
Long Western Theatre Campaign - Billy Yank and Johnny Rebb at War

Union campaign 1862-1865

Version: 1.0
Number of scenarios: 17
Longest path: 17
Campaign designers: Robert Mary and Starbuck, 21/05/2008
E-file: ACW e-file v. 1.01c December 2008

The Western Theater was an area defined by both geography and the sequence of campaigning. It originally represented the area east of the Mississippi River and west of the Appalachian Mountains. It excluded operations against the Gulf Coast and the Eastern Seaboard, but as the war progressed and William Tecumseh Sherman's Union armies moved southeast from Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1864 and 1865, the definition of the theater expanded to encompass their operations in Georgia and the Carolinas.

The West was by some measures the most important theater of the war. The Confederacy was forced to defend with limited resources an enormous land mass, which was subject to Union thrusts along multiple avenues of approach, including major rivers that led directly to the agricultural heartland of the South. Capture of the Mississippi River was one of the key tenets of Union General Winfield Scott's Anaconda Plan. Military historian J. F. C. Fuller has described this as an immense turning movement, a left wheel that started in Kentucky, headed south down the Mississippi River, and then east through Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

The Eastern Theater received considerably more attention than the Western, both at the time and in historical accounts. This is related to the proximity of the opposing capitals, the concentration of newspapers in the major cities of the East, and the fame of Eastern generals such as Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson.
