Retiredbum notes:  I found some select phrases of Laozi online, then I looked the corresponding translation up at Library of Chinese Classics---Chinese-English, published in Chinas Mainland.  The translation into English was given by Arthur Waley.  ( So dont get me wrong, I am NOT the translator.)

合抱之木，生于毫末；九层之台，起于累土；千里之行，始于足下。

The tree big as a mans embrace began as a tiny sprout.  The tower nine storeys high began with a heap of earth.  The journey of a thousand leagues began with what was under the feet.

祸莫大于不知足；咎莫大于欲得；故知足之足常足矣。

No disaster greater than not to be content with what one has; no presage of evil greater than that men should be wanting to get more.  Truly: He who has once known the contentment that comes simply through being content, will never again be otherwise than contented. 

天下莫柔弱於水，而攻坚强者莫之能胜，以其无以易之。

Nothing under heaven is softer or more yielding than water; but when it attacks things hard and resistant there is not one of them that can prevail.  For they can find no way of altering it. 

祸兮，福之所倚；福兮，祸之所伏。

It is upon bad fortune that good fortune leans, upon good fortune that bad fortune rests.

上善若水，水善利万物而不争，处众人之所恶，故几于道。

The highest good is like that of water.  The goodness of water is that it benefits the ten thousand creatures; yet itself does not scramble, but is content with the places that all men disdain.  It is this that makes water so near to the Way. 

天下皆知美之为美，斯恶已。皆知善之为善，斯不善已。

It is because every one under Heaven recognizes beauty as beauty, that the idea of ugliness exists.  And equally if every one recognized virtue as virtue, this would merely create fresh conceptions of wickedness. 

曲则全，枉则直，洼则盈，敝则新，少则得，多则惑。

To remain whole, be twisted!  To become straight, let yourself be bent.  To become full, be hollow.  Be tattered, that you may be renewed.  Those that have little may get  more; those that have much, are but perplexed.
