瑪德蓮小蛋糕Madeleine 的由來 :

貝殼狀的瑪德蓮小蛋糕，發源自法國洛林地區(Lorraine region)的Commercy鎮，1700年代末期。 

據說一位為當時洛林大公爵Duke of Lorraine，即波蘭Stanislas Leczinski國王(1677 –1766)工作，名為瑪德蓮的女僕當時取代Stanislas宮殿廚師，為宮廷宴會所作的點心。臨時上陣的她只會這項祖母教她的家傳小糕點，但深獲公爵喜愛，將蛋糕以瑪德蓮命名。 

又據說，Stanislas Leczinski 將食譜寄給了女兒Maria，她那時已嫁給了路易十五。 

又一說，是法國政治家Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Perigord( 1754–1838)家中蛋糕主廚 Avice發明 

傳統上，在一頓法國餐後，瑪德蓮小蛋糕是搭配茶飲最佳選擇。

而在西班牙，貝殼狀的蛋糕(magdalenas =蛋糕)則是為基督徒朝聖之旅到達終點"星野中的聖地亞哥"(Santiago de Compostela)的註記。(上圖)

朝聖之旅，除了傳通上"耶路撒冷"與"羅馬"，第三個便是聖地牙哥，源自St. James(亦即西班牙文之"聖地牙哥)的朝聖(The Way of St. James or St. James' Way)，海扇貝也是加利西亞(Galicia)t海邊常見之物，St. James的朝聖身上配備也包括了海扇貝，因此之後海扇貝便常為朝聖"星野中的聖地亞哥"的者作為象徵性的裝飾。
