BEITOU HOT SPRING MUSEUM 1. HISTORY The former Hot Spring Museum is Beitou Hot Spring Public Bath House, it was designed by a Japanese architecture moriyamanouke in 1913, based on the Mount. Izu Hot Spring Bath in Japan. It was the biggest public bath in East Asia at that time. 1923 during his survey of rice planting project at Jhuzihu, Japanese crown prince Hiroito has personally visited Beitou Hot Spring Public Bath, walking along the Peitou Creek and left a memorial tablet stone symbol beside the creek. Time and change of management this bath was gradually neglected. 1994 a group of teachers and students from Beitou Primary School and local residents petitioned for conservation of the public bath. 1997 eventually they were designated a third-grade historical site. After renovaion the public bath were transformed into the Beitou Hot Spring Museum on Oct. 31, 1998 for grand opening. 2. ARCHITECTURAL OVERVIEW More than 2,300 square meter of space on two floors. EXTERIOR- in Victorian style, whole building like British countryside villa with the vent on roof to improve ventilation. 1st Floor-built of brick, the bath is decorated with arcades and stained glass. 2nd Floor-built of wood tatmi-covered lobby follows the traditional Japanese architectural style. In the past typical Japanese way culture,1F big bath, change cloth 2F- take rest and a cup of tea, play chess, walk to balcony. INTERIOR- 3. The EXHIBITION ROOMS are divided into two floors. The entrance is on 2ND FLOOR - section A1 Walking through the past 400 years in Beitou. History and development of business in Beitou and process of reconstruction the museum. Beitou used to be well-known for its triangle rush, rice tangerines and porcelain industry, prompt delivery-scooter service, Nakashi etc. But now it is famous for its hot spring. In 1896, Hirata Gengo, a Japanese businessman from Osaka, set up the first hot spring hotel, Tenguan, in Beitou. Because Beitou is particularly favored by Hot Spring natural resources, it become a very important local cultural properties. Section A2 Balcony, enjoy the spectacular scenery of Beitou Creek. Center, tatami-covered lobby for relaxation, sometimes artworks display or art performance at the stage. Section A3 The Hollywood of Cenema, playing the old Taiwanese Films, trace the splendor of old Beitou. Section A4 Special Exhition Area, display paints, artworks or certain specific exhibition in this room from time to time. Section A5 Multimedia Room, presenting videos about Beitou. 1ST FLOOR - Section B1 Beitou Hot Spring, geological landscape and development. Beitou is located between the Datun Volcano Group and rims of Taipei Basin.The spring is formed through the hot water deep inside volcano acidified through permeation of volcano gases mixed with the ground water. Various types of hot spring water- Iron Oxide - Tin Beitou White Sulfur- Sulfur Valley Green Sulfur- Thermal Valley Green Sulfur Spring contains high concentration of sulfate mineral. The chemical composition is of acid chlorinated sulfate. PH value is between 1.2-1.6. Temperature - above 90 degree C It is strong acid spring, corrosive to building and metal. Soap is not applicable when bathing. It also contains trace of radio active matter- RADIUM, has magic effect for recreation, sanitarium, rehabitation and beauty. It is found in only two loctions in Asia, Beitou and Akita in Japan.. Section B2 HOKUTOLITE (Beitou Stone), The Beitou Creek originated from the Thermal Valley hot spring 100-400 meter away from the thermal valley entrance. This section of the creek is shallow and lukewarm , its riverbed is covered with Andesites and white sandstone pebbles. The dark gray andesite slowly turns white after soaking in the acidic hot spring water for sometime. And then the yellow and white deposits gelatinizing into layers of carapace-like substance appears on the surface of andesite, dense formation of translucent and cream-white rhomboid crystals, thickness - 0.5-1cm, adhere to the outermost layer of the carapac-like substance , This is the HOKUTOLITE. It is the only stone out of 4000 known minerals around the world that is named after a place in Taiwan. It was discovered by Mr. Okamoto in 1905. Related research was made by the NOBEL PRIZE WINNER Dr.Lee Yuan Che in his master degree report. Section B3 Hot Spring Gallery - It is indicated the distribution and development of hot spring in Taiwan as well as worldwide by charts and diagrams on two sides of the wall. Section B4 Special Exhibition Room - Documentary film with major events and activities about Peitou in Past and Today. Some precious meaningful Old photograph. Section B5 The splendor of the bath, reminiscent of Romanesque bath. The big bath in center is nine meter long, six meters wide and between 40 and 130 centimeters deep. The arcades and columns surrounding the bath simulate the environment of an ancient Roman Bath. The stained glass colorful design is reflected in the water of the bath, amazing. |
