 Peitou  Park    by Robert

1.   How Old : completed along with the Peitou Public Bath House in 1913.  It is one of the oldest parks in Taiwan .

2.   Why Built : Taiwan ’s first hot spring hotel – Tienguan was opened in 1896 and the railway from Taipei to Tamsui was finished in 1901.  Since then, more and more tourists came to Peitou to enjoy bathing in the hot springs and the beautiful scenery.

3.   Must-Sees :

A.    Giant old trees and a wide variety of plants – Abundant in vegetation, Peitou Park is praised as a miniature model of plants in Taiwan .

B. Stone Arch Bridge – the only one originally built still left till today.  It is humble but graceful.

C. Taiwan Pond – built in the shape of the island of Taiwan , filled with lotuses, small fish, shrimps, tadpoles and other organisms.

D. The Hot Spring Museum – transformed from the Public Bath House, where you learn about most of Peitou’s historical and geographic background, and the features of local culture.

E.   Green Building Library – Taiwan ’s first diamond-class green library, lying in the sea of trees with a creek flowing by.

F.   Grand Fountain & Duck Fountain – the two classical fountains were built in different styles but in good taste.  Besides adding a sense of elegance to the park, they also had a special function – adjusting the pressure of tap-water pipes.

G. The Statue of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen – the original one was erected in 1934 to honor Imura Daikichi, who planned and established Peitou Park and the Public Bath House.  Later in 1952, it was replaced as the Taiwan Restoration Monument , and then in 1965, it was finally changed into what it is now.

H. Taki – a Japanese term meaning “ hot waterfall “.  There were five Takis in Peitou Creek before, but now only two remain.
