Ten Gu An (天狗庵)

First of all let us check what is the meaning of Ten Gu (天狗). It describes a kind of goblin
or wizard who has red face and long nose. It also implies a man who is self-satisfied with feeling
of freedom. The creator of Ten Gu An was Hirata Gengo of which the story went as below.

Hirata was born in 1845. He grew up in the period of Mokufu in Japan. At his age of 21, it was
at the transit stage shifting from old social system to new one in Japan.
With his background of being a warrior, he acted as an instructor of martial art in Tokyo
at the beginning of Mei Ji period. Later, he found he had to find a good job for better living.
He changed to work at a mining factory in Osaka.

After several years experience in mining job, he thought he could make big money by
gold mining at Keelung area. He came to Taiwan in 1895 and went up to Zui Fang
mountain area where he discovered suitable for him to become rich. He applied to
government for permission of mining the gold. Unfortunately, it was turned down.
He was much disappointed with the result and what worse was he got sick physically
and psychologically. His dream of becoming a millionaire was turned into a bubble.

At that time, he heard that there was hot spring nearby Taipei area, Ta Tun mountain hill sides.
At end of November of 1895, he went to Beitou and made soaking in creek from time to time.
After almost one month, he found his health recovered. He was very happy with his recovering
of good health.

Next year 1896 in March, he visited Beitou again and purchased a cottage nearby the Beitou
creek. He constructed a hot spring hostel on the same spot which became the first one of its kind
in Taiwan.

Hirata Gengo was very satisfied with his owning Ten Gu An because he not only earned
much money but also got true happiness of life. Much more meaningful than being a millionaire.

Things changed while time passed by. Nowadays, Ten Gu An became invisible. The only
remaining articles were two stone pillars which should be the entry gate of Ten Gu An
in the past. Fortunately, good place is discovered by wise people.

Today you can see the beautiful building, Kagaya Hotel, standing in front of the past Ten Gu An.
Its management and service have been copied from Kagaya in Japan. Personnel have been trained
in Japan to render service in the same quality. We hope it will be a turning point
to make Beitou upgrade in various aspects.
