A Christmas Carol A Christmas Carol, published in 1843, is a story by English writer Charles Dickens (1812-1870), one of the world’s most popular, prolific, and skilled novelists. The story deals extensively with two of Dickens’ recurrent themes: social injustice and poverty. A Christmas Carol, with illustrations by John Leech (1817-1864), is a Victorian morality tale of an bitter miser, Ebenezer Scrooge. Scrooge, an old man who hates Christmas, is taught the meaning and spirit of Christmas by ghosts who show him his own past, present and future. In the end, Scrooge changes his life and reverts to a generous and kind-hearted soul. In later years, Dickens’s other short novels and stories for the Christmas season followed, notably The Chimes (1844) and The Cricket on the Hearth (1845). A Christmas Carol has been adapted to theater, radio, film, and television countless times. It has become a Christmas tradition and easily Dickens’ best known book. |
