Turning Lanes

For only having a 7-mile commute, I encounter an unbelievable amount of idiotic traffic behavior. Volume 7 deals with an intersection half a block from my house that is so problematic I sometimes find myself taking a different route just to avoid the potential of dying due to someone else’s idiocy.

After the stoplight one block from my house, there is a center turning lane. It is a double turning lane, meaning drivers from both directions can use it to turn left.

Seems pretty straightforward, right? Ha. HAAAA.

The law states that you can legally go no farther than 300 feet in a two-way center turn lane. The reason for this is because turn lanes are NOT passing lanes.

However, some people taunt the law and pull into the turning lane before it officially begins, essentially traveling well over a block or two before they reach the stoplight where they will actually be turning. (Note the red car.)

Incidentally, I (the spiffy green car) need to turn from this lane as well. I’m pretty sure you can see where this is headed.

Here is how the lane should be used by two cars coming from opposite directions that are both turning left:

Pretty smooth, huh? Like a well-choreographed ballet.

And here’s what typically occurs:

The green car has to quickly pull out of the lane because Mister Red Car is bogarting it.

Here’s the gesture that communicates to the red car that they are an asshelmet:

And here’s what could potentially occur if I didn’t have the reflexes of a nervous ferret:

Look at the flames! Just like in the movies.

Lesson of the day: Pull into the turning lane after you’re sure you’re not going to crash into someone. Because maybe their reflexes are more along the lines of a lazy manatee’s.
