Chen Qu Fei’s Fantasy Novels, Volume Two “Dreamscape Exchange”
1: The Insomniac Prisoner Yu Letian has suffered from insomnia for many years. Every deep night, when darkness floods the city like a tide, Yu Letian can only keep his dry eyes open, staring at the cracks on the ceiling spreading like spider webs. He is a successful professional, promoted to vice president of his company at a young age, but the overly tense lifestyle has left his nerves stretched to the breaking point. Repeated attempts with medication, yoga meditation, and even expensive psychotherapy all fail to grant him a moment of restful sleep at night. Until that night. When he finally collapses from exhaustion and falls asleep on the office sofa, he dreams. It is a dimly lit alley, faint whispers and fragmented music drifting through the air. Neon lights flicker like glowing flowers, releasing their fragrance into the darkness. At the alley’s end stands a small shop with a wooden signboard that reads: "Dreamscape Exchange." At the door stands a girl. She has cat ears, snow-white and lively, complementing her crystal-clear blue eyes. The girl claims to be the shop’s owner, named “Miaoyin.” “We can trade memories for good sleep here,” she says with a smile, her voice like winter sunshine—gentle yet tinged with coldness.
2: The Forgetting of First Love After his first trade with Miaoyin, Yu Letian finally experiences the long-lost peaceful sleep. He trades away a trivial childhood memory—once on a school field trip, he forgot his chopsticks and had to eat with his hands. Such a small, embarrassing moment, yet he gives it up without hesitation. That night, he sleeps like a baby. The trades become habitual. With every trade, his sleep quality improves, but at the same time, his past starts to blur. One sunny afternoon, Yu Letian meets Chen Mengmei—his college first love—on the street. Her smile remains warm like the first ray of spring sunshine. Standing outside a café, Yu Letian senses familiarity but cannot recall any shared memories between them. “Letian, don’t you remember me at all?” Chen Mengmei’s voice trembles slightly. “Sorry… did we know each other before?” Disappointment and sadness flash in her eyes, yet she gently nods, “Maybe I mistook you for someone else.” She turns and walks away, her figure thin and fragile in the afternoon sun.
3: The Void of Memories Yu Letian trades memories more frequently, tossing away more and more from childhood to youth without hesitation. His colleagues notice the change. Once confident and ambitious, Yu Letian grows cold and mechanical, speaking absentmindedly and sometimes blankly in conversations. One day, he looks into the mirror and sees his own eyes—a pair of hollow eyes, like an abyss. He decides to visit the Dreamscape Exchange again.
4: The Final Trade Miaoyin still smiles behind the counter as if she never left. “What else do you have to trade?” “I don’t know…” Yu Letian’s voice is low and hollow. “But I need real sleep. Complete sleep.” Miaoyin’s pupils narrow slightly, then she smiles like a hunting cat spotting its prey. “Then give up the last part of your ‘self’.” Yu Letian barely hesitates. He just wants to escape the endless insomnia.
5: The Reversed Ending When Yu Letian wakes up, he lies in a pristine white room—no pain, no thoughts, not even a past. Suddenly, a familiar voice sounds. “Welcome back, Letian.” It is Chen Mengmei. But Miaoyin stands beside her. “This is the true home of the Dreamscape Exchange,” Chen Mengmei says. “The memories you discarded have not vanished; they have become the nourishment here. Every soul that has lost its self is a brick in our world.” Miaoyin smiles and adds, “Congratulations on becoming the new owner of this shop.” At that moment, Yu Letian realizes—all the trades were pushing him toward this fate. Miaoyin will leave forever, passing the responsibility of shop owner to him. And Chen Mengmei is also part of this world—forever, impossible to escape.
“The Mirror of Prophecy”
1: The Revelation of the Bronze Mirror Chen Wuhui is a young and talented scholar specializing in philosophy and the study of human nature. From childhood, he has an insatiable thirst for truth but remains trapped between worldly recognition and fame. One day, while strolling down an ancient street in the city, Chen Wuhui enters a dusty antique shop by chance. The shop is filled with strange artifacts, but the most eye-catching is a bronze mirror intricately carved with twisting vines and flying birds, emitting a cold and mysterious glow. The shopkeeper is an elderly woman with a deep voice and a secretive smile. She tells Chen Wuhui that the bronze mirror is called the “Mirror of Prophecy,” said to reveal the future of its possessor. However, not everyone can see the true prophecy—only those with a strong desire for destiny can glimpse the light and shadow of the future in the mirror. Out of curiosity, Chen Wuhui buys the mirror and takes it back to his study.
2: The Radiance of the Future Chen Wuhui places the bronze mirror at the center of his study, lights a candle, and gazes into its surface. At first, the mirror only reflects his image—blurred and unremarkable. But over time, a blue glow appears, and a scene different from reality emerges. He sees himself standing on a lofty podium, surrounded by countless scholars and listeners admiring his lecture. Books, medals, and honors fill his room. His theories become the wisdom the world eagerly repeats. This vision excites Chen Wuhui. He believes it to be a prophecy of the future and plunges into his research with even more fanatic passion, burying himself daily in books and manuscripts. During this period, he meets several important figures:
Shen Zhiyin: Chen Wuhui’s close friend and colleague, skilled in history and literature research, loyal and wise. Often provides constructive criticism and advice.
Liu Ruoshui: A young painter who loves exploring the depths of soul and art. She and Chen Wuhui meet at an academic exhibition and quickly become close friends, even developing subtle romantic feelings.
Zheng Yuande: A distinguished member of the academic council, known for being strict and critical. Chen Wuhui views him as the toughest critic but desires his recognition.
3: The Shackles of Glory Years later, Chen Wuhui’s theories finally gain worldwide recognition. Fame and wealth flood in like tides. Countless disciples seek his teachings, and praise pours into his ears. However, this success gradually distances him from his old friends. Shen Zhiyin finds Chen Wuhui cold and arrogant, intolerant of dissent. Liu Ruoshui slowly drifts away, noticing his work becoming rigid and mechanical, losing its original vitality and purity. One day, Chen Wuhui decides to gaze into the mirror again to confirm if his path is correct. But what he sees is entirely different— He lies alone in a cold room, surrounded by scattered books and dust. No visitors, no mourning for his death. Though his theories are carved on a monument, they are like unread epitaphs forgotten in desolation. Chen Wuhui feels bone-chilling fear. He begins to doubt if he is heading toward the mirror’s foretold fate.
4: The Trap of Escape To change his fate, Chen Wuhui tries to reconcile with Shen Zhiyin and restore his friendship with Liu Ruoshui. But they have long lost hope. Liu Ruoshui leaves the city to pursue true art elsewhere; Shen Zhiyin retires to the countryside and refuses to communicate with Chen Wuhui. During this lonely time, Chen Wuhui meets a mysterious traveler—Luo Yifeng. This old, mad man claims to have once owned the “Mirror of Prophecy” and tried to escape its curse. Luo Yifeng tells Chen Wuhui that the real curse is not the mirror itself, but the endless desire within the human heart. No matter how one struggles, the mirror only reflects the deepest obsession inside. Inspired, Chen Wuhui decides to completely abandon his pursuit of fame and status. He throws the bronze mirror from a height, shattering it into hundreds of pieces. Then he chooses a simple, peaceful life focused on inner tranquility and the pursuit of wisdom. Yet, the true secret lies hidden within the fragments…
5: The Unexpected Truth Years later, now elderly, Chen Wuhui sees a fragment of the bronze mirror in the hands of a young scholar. The scholar claims to have bought it from an antique collector and shares a shocking secret. The collector discovered that the mirror does not predict the future, but reflects the possessor’s deepest fears and desires. When Chen Wuhui learns this truth, he is at the twilight of his life. He smiles bitterly, realizing his life was shaped by the illusions cast by that mirror. Finally, on a quiet morning, he passes away peacefully, a smile of release on his face.
1: The Wandering Painter Lin Fengmian was a frustrated young painter, carrying his tools, wandering aimlessly through city streets. His paintings had never attracted attention; his inspiration was like a dried-up well—no matter how he dug, he only drew up muddy water. One evening, wandering in the drizzle, he accidentally entered an old alley. The buildings looked like relics from another era, worn and quiet. Around the corner stood a small, classical coffee shop—“The Garden of Spirit’s Breath.” The bronze plaque on the door was faded but still emitted a unique charm. Lin Fengmian pushed open the door; inside, the air was thick with coffee aroma and an indescribable mysterious feeling. Warm yellow pendant lights lit the dim space, walls adorned with old paintings and strange specimens. “Welcome.” An elegant middle-aged woman stepped out from behind the counter. Her hair was black as night, her eyes deep, and her voice soft like whispering wind. “I am the owner, Yi Ling,” she smiled. “Perhaps the coffee here can give you the inspiration you seek.” Lin Fengmian showed a hint of doubt, but his hungry and cold body forced him to sit down. Yi Ling brought him a steaming cup of coffee; the light brown liquid shimmered, as if filled with countless shattered stars. “This is the ‘Drink of Inspiration,’” Yi Ling said. Lin took a tentative sip and was amazed to find a flood of vivid and fantastical images rushing through his mind. He saw stars dancing on the sea surface, giant birds soaring out of clouds, and eternal flames burning deep in quiet forests. That night, back in his studio, he created paintings unlike anything before.
2: Rising Fame Lin Fengmian’s paintings quickly attracted attention and praise in the art circle. At exhibitions, countless people marveled at his dreamlike works. For the first time, Lin became greedy for more inspiration. Whenever his inspiration ran dry, he found himself irresistibly drawn back to the Garden of Spirit’s Breath. However, as his fame grew, the mysterious café became increasingly elusive. Sometimes Lin had to wander the city for days before finding it again. “Does this place truly exist or not?” He repeatedly asked Yi Ling, but she always smiled gently and never answered. “The source of inspiration is never outside the shop, nor inside it,” Yi Ling said calmly, as if stating an undeniable truth. Lin paid no mind and continued relying on the magical coffee.
3: Growing Distance As his creative frenzy intensified, Lin Fengmian grew distant from the outside world. His studio became an isolated space filled with whimsical works but also a strange melancholy. Each time he found the Garden of Spirit’s Breath, he craved more of the Drink of Inspiration. But one day, upon opening the door, he found only a note: “Lin Fengmian, true inspiration comes from within yourself. Do not rely on this place anymore.” Lin felt anger and confusion, crumpled the note, and threw it on the ground. “I need that coffee! I can’t create without it…” But no matter how he searched, the café never appeared again.
4: Self-Redemption Lost without the Garden, Lin fell into a long creative block and depression. Reflecting on Yi Ling’s words, he began trying to dig inspiration from within. After many failures, he finally painted a work unlike any before. This painting was like a mirror, reflecting the deepest emotions and desires of his heart. Just as he felt relieved, Yi Ling suddenly appeared in his studio. “You have finally found true inspiration,” she smiled. Lin was surprised and confused. “Why are you here? Didn’t you say we would never meet again?” Yi Ling nodded gently: “Yes, because you have found yourself.” Suddenly, Lin felt a dizzy spell, his vision blurred…
5: The Unexpected Truth Lin Fengmian awoke to find himself standing before the door of the Garden of Spirit’s Breath. The plaque above was weathered and mottled; the shop seemed abandoned for years. Yi Ling’s voice came from behind him: “This shop never truly existed.” Turning around, Lin saw Yi Ling’s figure become transparent and illusory. “Everything you saw was a manifestation of your own inner longing and fear for creation.” He stared blankly as everything shattered like bubbles. “The only thing truly real is your own soul.” Yi Ling’s voice grew faint and finally vanished into the air. Lin Fengmian finally understood: the café, Yi Ling, even the so-called ‘Drink of Inspiration’—all were projections of his own soul. From then on, he no longer depended on external things but sought inspiration from within, creating countless moving and profound paintings.
