In 1996, I decided to leave the company that I founded together with a
few friends. No matter how internet will be the future, my nature was
to provide technical solutions, not pursue the fortune.
Turning around the company was one option, but walking away was
what my heart told me, even with the potential big hit of internet
richness. First time in my life, I was able to play good baseball. I
lothed internet, the way people were promoting it, especially the idea
of weblogs, as blogs were called at that time, for its tendency to
make people believe keeping a little space in the cyber space is a little
bit like being the hand of god. The popularity of blogs should never be
underestimated , as we said "The blogging bandwagon is coming to
our way", but gone is the intimacy of a personal visit, gone is the
intimacy of a personal phone call.
In 1995, I wrote in my NSF proposal that: "People will be able to
make their voice heard across the world. However, the content is
what really counts." Yes, contents, the most important thing about
human beings is the content, not the media. After all these years,
it is depressing because most of the time, bloggers just suffer the
delusions of fantastic grandeur. And disconnect with the real world.
I consider internet as entertainment, as we are working with apple and
MLB to make baseball games available for download, minutes after
the games end. Many peope in Taiwan love baseball. When you watch
the Chinese-Taipei v.s. Chinese game, have you ever thought about
whether MLB want Chinese-Taipei to do better in 2008 Olympics
baseball or China? Just look at the fact that MLB is paying the coach
for Chinese Olympic baseball team. Why, just think about how much
more money they would make if there Chinese baseball produce
another YaoMing for MLB? Isn't blog the perfect tool to bring up such
arguements to public's eyes? However, people like the feelings that
they are in control. And, the traffice does not usually flow to article
like that. A article about how much a bikini wax cost might be more
attractive then such story. It is human nature.
Forget about internet, forget about blogs. To me, nothing beats the
feelings of standing on the top of moutain, waiting for my turn to ski
full speed down the hill. Nothing beats playing water with my kids in
the pool. Nothing beats sitting on the couch yealling with my family
and friends watching my favorite basebal l club play. And nothing could
beat the musics played in my home. The Blogging Bandwagon? Go
ahead, send it to my way.
