Cloze Test Reading Exercises

These texts have a limited vocabulary and have been written specifically for ESL learners.  All the texts have Unique Word and Word Frequency profiles with dictionary links which can be viewed by clicking the links at the top of the page.

In 1588, the Spanish sent a great navy, (1) as the "Armada", to attack England. There were 130 ships in the Armada, with a (2) of 30,693 people aboard, including 19,000 soldiers to invade England. The English had 197 ships to fight the Armada, and Francis Drake, England's most (3) and popular sailor and national hero, was (4) the Vice-Admiral in charge of the expedition aboard the ship "Revenge". The battle lasted (5) 5 days off the English coast, and only 67 of the original 130 Spanish ships returned to Spain.

Spain was never (6) again to challenge the English sailors, who dominated the sea traffic in the Atlantic, and continued to attack Spanish ships (7) they could. Many English expeditions were sent to the Caribbean to attack the Spanish colonies, and English sailors travelled (8) over the world seeking new places to trade and make money.
