Sowash: The Town Beyond the Mountain for Baritone

Hello —

Do some poems stick in your head?   A fair number have stuck in mine.  It comes from writing songs.

When I decide to set a poem to music, I first memorize it and say/sing it to myself dozens of times before writing down any notes.  Years later, long after having finished the song, I can still recall the poem.

Sometimes I recite poems to delight and surprise my friends.

On the final evening of an eight-day hike with friends from Pearisburg to Roanoke VA on the Appalachian Trail, a perfect moment for poetry presented itself.  We were watching the sunset; crimson, salmon and lavender tones irradiated the sky above tier upon tier of distant blue mountains.  A reverent, wistful silence fell upon us.  After a while, I made bold to recite a favorite poem, Odell Shepard’s lovely "The Town Beyond the Mountain."

The Town Beyond the Mountain
        Where we have never been,
Shines in a sunset glory
        Ineffably serene.

Above the small white houses
        Its lofty elms trees blow
A more mysterious music
        Than any trees we know.

Noon wears the color of eve there,
And the song of its narrow stream
Comes down from a hidden country
Deep in the hills of dream.

There Quietness keeps her dwelling
        And Peace descends like snow
On the Town Beyond the Mountain ...
        Where we will never go.

I'd love to know what you think about this music; reply if you're inclined.  But please don't feel that you are expected to reply.  I'm just glad to share my work in this way.

As always, feel free to forward this message to friends who might enjoy it.

Anyone can be on my little list of recipients for these mpFrees (as I call these musical emails).  To sign up, people should email me at rick@sowash.com, sending just one word:  "Yes."   I'll know what it means.   To unsubscribe, reply “unsubscribe.”
