Sowash: Scherzo from Serenade for Mary, for clarinet, flute, violin, and cello
I ( Sowash) wrote the Serenade for Mary to honor Mary Hoffman, who was the Music Director at WOSU-FM, a classical music radio station, in Columbus, OH, when I was a twenty-something broadcaster there. Mary’s lively and gracious manner, her delightful sense of humor and her ardent love of classical music inspired everyone who worked with her. In 1979, Mary took ill and was absent from work for six weeks. I wrote this piece for her as a musical “get-well card." I engaged some musicians from the Ohio State University Music Dept. to record the work. The recording was then broadcast on WOSU-FM while Mary listened at home. They say laugher is good for you. “Scherzo” is the Italian word for “joke.” This movement is a little eccentric and not exactly a knee-slapper, but it’s still a good joke. It starts with some exuberant galumphing in the strings. The flute and the clarinet enter with some contrasting ideas of their own. The two musical textures are superimposed, trade places, return. There’s some dissonance thrown in but only as a condiment. All in good fun. Mary recovered completely. So I guess it worked! The power of music! Mary is now 88, hale and hearty. I talked to her this week. She has the same charm and ready laugh that made her so much fun to work with 35 years ago and, of course, that marvelous, warm “radio” voice that endeared her to listeners. To hear the scherzo from Serenade for Mary played with wit and verve by clarinetist Michelle Gingras, flutist Betty Douglas, violinists Kris Frankenfeld and Elizabeth Steva, violist Dorotea Vismara Hoffman and cellist Ellen Shertzer, (the musicians who recorded it on my CD entitled “Serenade”), click here: http://www.sowash.com/ To see a PDF of the score, click here: http://www.sowash.com/ I'd love to know what you think about this music; reply if you're inclined. But please don't feel that you are expected to reply. I'm just glad to share my work in this way. As always, feel free to forward this message to friends who might enjoy it. Anyone can be on my little list of recipients for these mpFrees (as I call these musical emails). To sign up, people should email me at rick@sowash.com, sending just one word: "Yes." I'll know what it means. Rick Sowash Cincinnati, OH Oct. 4, 2015 www.sowash.com photo: http://www.sowash.com/press/
