In the third year of the Dahe era (829 AD), I served as an aide in the Jiangxi Secretariat under Lord Shen, the former Deputy Minister of Personnel. At that time, Haohao was just thirteen years old and had newly joined the official register of entertainers for her exceptional singing. A year later, Lord Shen was reassigned to govern Xuanzhou, and Haohao’s registration was likewise transferred there. Two more years passed when Shen Sushi, Lord Shen’s younger brother, took her in as a concubine—she was then still a young maiden wearing twin coiled buns. Another two years later, I chanced upon Haohao again in the eastern quarter of Luoyang. Stirred by memories and melancholy, I composed this poem for her. PS I know I am not good enough to translate the poem right now. But I would like to share it with you, as attached below. |
