When my wife called an insurance company yesterday, she was told by the pre-recorded voice to hit the "pound sign" to continue the service. She did not know what the pound sign is, then she asked me to help her.

There are two signs below the numbers on the phone set, a * and a #. Frankly, I don’t know the term "pound sign", but I do know * is asterisk; hence, the other one, #, must be the answer.
