Yesterday afternoon I went to the downtown adjacent to the place of my daughter's home is, where there was a bazaar taking place. Police blocked several streets, and so let townspeople leisurely stroll along a variety of different stalls, most of them were selling stuff under the name for charity, including straying pets. (But the prices were not cheap.) Of course there were other stuff not that "charitable", like some stands for beer, hot dogs, and so on. One thing was indispensable: a band and rock singers, and some people were dancing on the street to the music. That was almost always the way the typical bazaars were.
Now urban America have been highly capitalist societies: plazas, shopping malls and supermarkets are everywhere. Why such kind of bazaars is still existing, let alone flea markets, garage or yard sales. I think human beings are one of the gregarious animals. Bazaars are there to fulfill the fundamental need of people's getting together, sometime, somewhere. In other word, the existence of bazaar has its own social function. See the drone of people hustling at 南門市場 and 迪化街 before lunar eve every year, you will understand what people need besides purchasing.
