Mike & The Mechanics成軍於1984年，其中的靈魂人物是創世紀合唱團(Genesis)的創始團員Mike Rutherford．

The Living Years是一首輕柔搖滾民謠，歌詞深刻描寫父子兩代經常產生的矛盾與缺乏溝通，來不及在有生之年說出心中的話將成為一輩子的遺憾．由BA Robertson BA 羅伯森和Mike Rutherford 邁克爾·盧瑟福創作，由成軍於1984年的英國搖滾樂團Mike + The Mechanics錄製，它於 1988 年 12 月在英國和美國發行，作為專輯《Living Years 》中的第二首單曲，在1989年拿下全美熱門流行榜的冠軍．
