inner ----是其中最籠統的字，意思最廣泛，它可以用在地理方面， (如the inner regions of the island )，也可以表示某物被圍繞的部份，(如an inner room of the hotel)，也可形容向裡的那一面, (如the inner edge of the terrance)，除了這些實體方面的意義外，它還可表示隱密或無意識的思想活動，

      (如an inner ripeness for change)

interior ---也有地理上的涵義，如the arid interior of Australia.這個字特別用在指隱蔽，或不容易察覺的地方，如an interior courtyard它也可以用來內心的思想，如 interior monologue (內心獨白)。

internal ---就完全偏重於指「被完全包圍」的東西，如 the internal organs of the body , 它也可以用於思想活動，在這種用法時，它 的意義就比較接近inner，而不是interior，這時它代表的意思就是指「因…的原因」，而表現出來的內心感受，如：an internal uneasiness that at last became apparent in his nervous pacing.

inward ----這個字通常用來指精神狀態，如an inward thoughts(內在思想)這個字常指向內的方向，往裡去的動作，如an inward door(向裡開的門)
