Although our world seemingly always follows scientific laws, there are many rumors about violations of them. The typical bookstore gives a good illustration. Some bookshelves are full of books based on AUGP, but some other bookshelves are full of books describing unscientific ideas. If any statement in a book of the latter type is true, AUGP is violated. Now we give an account of this situation. We begin with a discussion about some categories of these ideas.
     One unscientific idea is the existence of ghosts. There are ghost stories everywhere. Every country has its own set of ghost stories throughout history. Why do these stories, from different sources, have so many things in common? Is there a world belonging to ghosts who are allowed to visit us sometimes? Or are these stories merely created from people’s imagination?
     There are people claiming to have special powers like telekinesis, psychokinesis, telepathy, or extra sensory perception. These abilities are attractive because the foundation of science needs to be revised if any of them are true. Some scientists are involved in researching these things. However, most scientists look down upon this type of research and simply consider them all nonsense. The fact is that these activities have never stopped, despite having little importance in the canonical academic circle.
     There are fortune tellers in many different cultures and countries. A person may pay some money to a fortune teller to hear about his or her future. Many people believe in such things. It seems that fortune tellers can make assertions about things in the future with a high probability of success, otherwise they could not survive. Time is an important order of the universe. The future generally can’t be seen, and the past absolutely can’t be altered. As a consequence, for most people, a meaning of life is to discover the future. The ability to predict the future is a great privilege, if it can truly be possessed. Why are some people given such a privilege to make money and fulfill their desires? It’s unfair to others who are subject to the restriction of time and have to work hard for survival.
     On the same earth, at one corner there are skyscrapers with all kinds of modern facilities, but at another corner there are voodoo dolls and necromantic tools. Shadows of darkness lurk in our world. Sorcery, black magic, and other similar practices are things that normal civilized people in an industrialized society don’t want to think about. They are not likely to be things that originated from a good God, because they bring fears to people and have no beneficial purpose. Nevertheless, they may be some things disturbing the operation of nature, because these practices do attract and affect some people. Scientific investigations of these matters generally have no definite conclusion.
     Alien encounters are another type of unexplainable event. They have nothing to do with Christianity. According to the Bible, humans are the superintendents of all creatures, so there should be no other intelligent beings. Some people said that the miraculous accounts in the Bible are deeds of aliens. Modern science can’t explain them, because we are not as advanced as those aliens. These sayings distort the truth of Christianity, and we must strongly oppose them. On the other hand, according to some scientists, if we are products of a series of rare events, the possibility of the existence of another advanced civilization would be zero; therefore, no other species from another planet would visit us. The official scientific project on this issue, SETI, has no positive result. However, reports about visitors from outer space are numerous, and many people believe them. Mystery crop circles, people abducted by aliens, UFO witnesses, and many other strange stories are right there. Why is that?
     It seems that our world is not so scientific. Is it because most people don’t have enough ability to determine whether something is true or false? Is it because our scientific knowledge is not good enough to explain everything in the world? Is it because something contradictory to science actually happens?
     Here we offer an explanation based on the big picture. Christianity does claim that supernatural things can happen, so the world is not so scientific. However, it only stresses the importance of the miracles about Jesus. The following paragraphs are general illustrations of our world.
     I truly expect that the following is the real description of the history of our universe: In the beginning, God designed a set of very beautiful, elegant, and delicate rules, and let the universe start and follow these rules. God let it go for billions of years without interfering. He clearly knows that this universe will allow complex organisms to emerge automatically at a very, very low probability. In certain conditions, these chemical machines are even able to evolve into beings with the advanced intelligence to create civilizations. Moreover, these beings are capable of supporting interactions with something causing conscious experiences. God only interferes with the rules of nature when these smart organisms — people on earth — exist in the universe. Events violating scientific laws only happen during a short period, our recorded history, and inside a small part of space, our solar system. It is because God cares for these special creatures.
     The main events God has performed in violation of scientific laws are Jesus Christ’s birth, miracles, and resurrection. This series of events are the most important things in the universe. They opened a window for us to know God within a mechanical universe. If you investigate stars billions of light years away, you can’t find evidence of God. If you investigate particles smaller than a billionth meter, you can’t find evidence of God. If you investigate the remains of events which happened billions of years ago, you can’t find evidence of God. You can only recognize God through the stories of Jesus Christ, God’s only son, who became a man on earth.
     To create events that accompany the central miraculous events of the universe, God intervenes in the natural world during some other occasions. There are many supernatural records in the Bible, and there are reasons for them to be there. We may also expect that God performs other miracles outside of biblical history. We suggest that our souls are transcendental beings, so it is not surprising that there are some signs among us. Sometimes God does supernatural things in order to answer prayers. Sometimes God does supernatural things, not in order to answer prayers, but in order to carry out his own plans. God may do anything if he sees that it is good. According to the testimonies of many Christians, God continues to perform miracles in our day.
     The panorama of the miracles God has performed in the history of the universe looks like the skyline of Chicago seen from South Lakeshore Drive northbound. There are two very tall landmark buildings, and many lower ones surrounding them. One landmark is the Aon Center, symbolizing the exodus from Egypt. God performed many miracles through Moses in front of the Egyptians and the Hebrews 3,400 years ago. The other landmark, the tallest building in Chicago, is the Sears Tower, symbolizing Jesus’ life. The birth of Jesus, the signs performed by him, and his resurrection are the greatest miracles that ever happened in the universe. During Jesus’ days on earth, God performed the greatest miraculous events. On the scale of the violation of natural laws, no other events are comparable to what happened during those days. It is because the whole universe was created for these events during this special period of time. It is because these events during this special period of time brought salvation to the entire world. It is God’s plan to intervene in a mechanical world for the sake of redemption.
     Unfortunately, evil powers are also allowed supernatural capabilities. If they can influence people in many different areas, they should not be restricted to disturb the order of the universe for bad purposes. Actually, the spiritual world is an important battlefield of the war between God and his enemies, because the ultimate goal of this war is the ownership of human souls.
     God permits evil supernatural interventions to exist. That’s why many confusing events occur around us. Here we try to figure out how they work; nevertheless, the following are merely some guesses as to what we did before. A group of evil beings produce a system of events leading some people to practice black magic. These events look credible for the people who fear or believe them. These events look incredible for the people who don’t fear or don’t believe them. A group of evil beings produce a system of events leading some people to believe in the existence of aliens. These events are numerous enough to confuse some people, or to make some people use alien-related explanations to distort the truth of Christianity. These events are not numerous enough to let the scientific investigations find concrete evidence for them, or for the public to recognize them.
     It’s God who arranges everything in the universe. He allows good and bad supernatural events to be interspersed within a regulated universe along with some special statistical features. These events are few but not too few. These events are indistinct but not extinct. For people who have faith in God, they can see his helping hand in many things in their lives. For people who are interested in odd supernatural occurrences, there are many that consume their time and energy. For people who believe that Jesus Christ is not the only savior of human beings, there are many other religions that they could choose from. For people who believe that scientific laws will never be violated, they won’t meet an unscientific event in their lifetimes. The universe is designed in this way for people to make their own decisions. We have a scientific and not so scientific world for testing faith.
     As a result, most testimonies of Christians don’t have a miraculous nature. Many things leading people to believe in God, or strengthening people’s faith, are common events satisfying all scientific rules. Special reports contradicting normal experience are really rare. Most Christians never have a supernatural experience, although the central belief of their lives is a series of supernatural claims. For people who don’t believe in Christianity, most testimonies of Christians can be explained by coincidences or psychological factors. They also assume that other inexplicable occurrences are either false or faked. This situation fits our overall perspective of the world described above. People are required to believe the miracles of the Bible in a world which has almost no miracles.
     If you are a true atheist, you have trouble with all mysterious reports in the world. When you search the term “unexplainable” or “supernatural” using Google, you must assume science can explain all the thousands of results. You may look into some results and check whether your knowledge and wisdom can deal with them. Otherwise, you have to say that AUGP is not true. Do you feel uncomfortable with that? Actually, this is the reason why people have been afraid of beings like ghosts for thousands of years. (If you insist that ghosts don’t exist, at least there are stories about them, and the people in these stories are frightened.) Normal people know their physical capabilities, and know that ghosts are unnatural beings. If ghosts wanted to cause harm, people wouldn’t know how to defend themselves. Those terrible beings also reveal some secrets about a transcendental world, which may relate to people’s fate after death, and thus bring out their instinctive fears.
     Christians don’t have to fear. The world view of Christianity is that supernatural events can happen and did happen. The miracles recorded in the Bible are examples. They were performed by God, who has the absolute power over the universe he created. These events are the most important events of the whole universe. The miraculous essence of these events shows how important they are. Some evil powers can do similar things to confuse or frighten people in an attempt to hold back God’s work. However, they can only do these things within the limits that God allows. Christians don’t have to fear, because they can rely on God’s power to be free from those troubles. No evil can stand in front of the power of the almighty one.
