T: I’m so sorry about that, but my wife is really seasick.

S: One way to stop the effects is to focus on the horizon.

N: That’s what I’ve been trying to do for the last half hour, but it’s not working at all.

T: Is there anything you can do for her?

S: Yes, since staying out on deck is not helping, I suggest going back to your cabin and having your wife lie down with her eyes closed.

N: How is that going to help?

S: By closing your eyes, you stop them from telling your brain that you are not seeing any movement when your body actually senses it.

T: That seems to make sense. C’mon, honey, I’ll take you back to our cabin.

N: I guess I have no choice but to ride this out.

生活必備字詞：

1. the horizon  地平線[the S]

The sun has risen above the horizon. 太陽已從地平線升起。

At last, they saw an island on the horizon. 終於他們見到地平線上有一個島。

2. focus on   ph. 集中注意力／焦點於……

3. suggest  建議、提議[+v-ing][+(that)][+wh-]

suggest 表示「建議、提議」的意思時，後面不能加「人」作直接受詞。
所謂「建議」是建議「事情」，後面要加「非人的」名詞、動名詞、名詞子句。

而由that帶領的名詞子句，動詞必須用：
"should + 原形V "，其中should可省略

（語意清楚時也可省略that，假如that在句首時一定不能省。）

EX：

We suggest (that) the house (should) be repaired at once.

（我們建議這房子應立即整修。）

They suggested (that) he (should) do it alone.  ß 不是does

（他們建議他應單獨去做此事。

The doctor insisted (that) he (should) stop smoking.  ß 不是stops

（醫生堅持他要戒菸。）

I move (that) the meeting (should) be postponed.  ß 不是is

（我提議這會議應延期。）

來看幾個例句的正誤，「我建議去看場電影」：

I suggest that we go to a movie. (○)  

I suggest we go to a movie.  (○)   

I suggest going to a movie.   (○)   

I suggest to you that we go to a movie.  (○) 
（to you 是副詞，修飾 suggest ，表示 suggest 的「對象」。）

I suggest you to go to a movie.  (X)  （直接加「人」）

I suggest us to go to a move.   (X)   （直接加「人」）

表建議、要求、堅持、命令…等的動詞, ，
後面都是要加「非人的」名詞、動名詞、名詞子句。

這類動詞大致列舉如下：

建議 : suggest, move, propose, recommend

要求 : ask, demand, require, request

堅持 : insist, urge, maintain

命令 : order, command

4. seem to     

seem後面接to有兩種用法：

seem + to(介係詞) + 某人： 某人覺著似乎好像…

It seems to me that it's going to rain. 我覺著似乎好像要下雨了。

seem + to-v (不定詞)： 似乎像是(動作)...

He seems to have left the room. 看來他像是已離開了房間。

5. make sense   表示有意義、有道理、合理、行得通、講得通

This sentence doesn’t make any sense. 這句子毫無意義。

當你聽懂時，就會覺得是合理的，所以就make sense

但當你沒聽懂時，就會覺得沒道理或是講不通，所以就是make no sense

6. not/no…but…  除了(只能…)…而不(沒有)…

I have no choice but to ride this out. 除了去渡過這難關，我沒有任何選擇。

7. ride out…  安全度過(大風、風暴…等難關)；經受得起 

ride - rode – ridden – riding
 

The ship rode out the storm. 船安然度過了風暴。

We shall certainly ride out every difficulty. 我們一定能夠經受住一切困難。
