Dolls, both old and new, are very popular collectors' items. Some can sell for hundreds and even thousands of dollars. One of the more popular trends is the Blythe doll. It is a fashion doll with an oversized head and eyes that can take on different colors. Since 1972, fans from all over the world have been dressing and photographing them in various settings.
Taiwan also produces many dolls, and they help people learn firsthand about its culture. Women in the northern district of Taishan make dolls that look like important female figures from Taiwan's history, such as pop diva Fong Fei-fei and golf sensation Yani Tseng. The dolls are meant to encourage women to be independent.
