The world’s most prosperous nations

2012世界最富裕国家排行榜,美日台港中均无望ZT

The U.S. falls off the list of the Legatum Institute's most prosperous countries.

For you and your family, the definition of prosperity might be simple. It might mean health, happiness, a roof over your heads, a warm bed, and a stocked pantry.

When defining prosperity for entire nations, the exercise becomes more complex. Using eight measures*, the Legatum Institute has ranked the most prosperous nations on earth. The U.S., still struggling through a recession and fresh off a dicey election, has fallen out of the top 10, but where does Canada land on? It's the world's number 6!

1. Norway

Last year’s rank: 1
The most prosperous nation on earth doesn’t have the best economy (only second-best), the best health care system (only fourth-best) or the best education system (only sixth-best). Instead, Norway excels simply because it’s strong across the board. Of the eight measures the Legatum Institute used to measure the prosperity of a country, Norway scores lower than sixth place just once (it ranked 16th for strength of government), a classification no other nation can claim to share.

The world’s most prosperous nations

2. Denmark

Last year’s rank: 2
Denmark is the country that offers the greatest opportunity for entrepreneurs in the world, a title it’s held for three years running. Curiously, Denmark’s economy is nothing to write home about (it’s ranked 19th in the world, down from fourth in 2010) but there are other things the nation can hang its hat on. Denmark is safe (eighth-safest in the world) and has a government suited to lead it through economic woes (third-strongest).

3. Sweden

Last year’s rank: 5
According to the Legatum Institute, Sweden’s economy is strong — and improving, too. In 2010, the Swedes had the seventh-sturdiest economy in the world; in 2011 it was ranked sixth, this year it’s ranked fifth. And what’s behind the booming Swedish economy? According to Legatum, only one other nation, to appear next on this list, better fosters entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial growth than Sweden.

4. Australia

Last year’s rank: 3
Of course, it must be something in the water. The only education system that is stronger than Australia’s is neighbour New Zealand’s. The Aussies, though, are no one-trick pony. The country also boasts the third-strongest sense of personal freedom among its citizens, and has a health care system ranked similarly to that of Canada (Australia came in 17th place while Canada reached 15th place).

5. New Zealand

Last year’s rank: 4
New Zealand’s economy is ranked just 27th in the world (down from 17th as recently as 2010), lower than countries such as France, Belgium and the U.K. But perhaps the Kiwis are smarter than the rest of us. Literally. According to the Legatum Institute, New Zealand has the finest education system in the world, a distinction it’s held twice in the last three years.

6. Oh,Canada,My Homeland! 呵,我心安处是我乡,哈,老二,您烦恼了!

Last year’s rank: 6

Canada, as we are proud to say, is among the most well-rounded nations in the world, and such sentiment is backed by Legatum’s findings. According to the firm, Canada’s economy (eighth-strongest) and government (sixth-strongest) stand out. But something to brag about above all is our country’s sense of personal freedom, which was found to be the strongest in the entire world.

7. Finland

Last year’s rank: 7
Finland, at least according to the Legatum Institute, doesn’t draw its strength from its economy. In fact, according to the firm’s report, the Finnish economy’s strength is falling when compared to other nations, ranked ninth in 2010, then down to 15th last year and 16th this year. But Finland excels elsewhere. The country has the third-best culture for entrepreneurs in the world, according to Legatum, and is the third-safest nation on earth.

8. Netherlands

Last year’s rank: 9
Across the eight measures used by the Legatum Institute, the Netherlands doesn’t crack the top five in any of them. But the Dutch are improving, if nothing else. Last year, according to Legatum, the Netherlands was ranked ninth in the world for its healthcare system; this year it’s seventh. Last year, according to Legatum, the Netherlands was ranked 12th in the world for its entrepreneurial culture; this year it comes in at number 10.

9. Switzerland

Last year’s rank: 8
Switzerland, to the surprise of nobody who follows global “best of” lists, excels at many things, including its third-ranked health care system, according to the Legatum Institute. But the Swiss do two things incredibly well. The nation, according to Legatum, has not only the strongest government in the world, but also the sturdiest economy there is today.

10. Ireland

Last year’s rank: 11
According to Legatum’s rankings, Ireland is still mired in a sluggish, if improving, economy; last year, the nation’s economy ranked 35th of 140 countries surveyed, this year it’s up to 25th. But Ireland’s strength lies in its safety and security, and its atmosphere that fosters a sense of personal freedom. In both those metrics, the Irish rank fourth in the entire world.
