美國哲學家詩人愛默生寫過一首很可愛的短詩〈大山和小松鼠〉(The Mountain and the Squirrel),告訴大家:我們其實不用過於斤斤計較財富的損失,而應當好好思考生活的目地和方式——「安貧樂道」是一種值得歌頌的生命哲學,而不應是大對小、強對弱、富對貧的嘲諷。大山和小松鼠

大山罵松鼠「小癟三」
小松鼠回答
「沒錯你很大
但萬物四季
必須是一個整體
才能寒來暑往
各依天命
我一點也不覺得丟臉
安心做我自己
如果你嫌我不夠大
我也可以嫌你不夠小
而且還笨手笨腳
但我還是感謝你建造了
一條美麗的松鼠道
每人本領不同 各有神通
若說我揹不動大森林
那你也啃不破小胡桃
The mountain and the squirrel
Had a quarrel,
And the former called the latter “Little Prig.”
Bun replied,
“You are doubtless very big;
But all sorts of things and weather
Must be taken in together,
To make up a year
And a sphere.
And I think it no disgrace
To occupy my place.
If I’m not so large as you,
You are not so small as I,
And not half so spry,
I’ll not deny you make
A very pretty squirrel track;
Talents differ; all is well and wisely put;
