My name is Dawn, the time of day when sunlight first appears in the east. Helping people to reach their goals in language acquisition is my career for life.
Graduated as an education major and English minor from the National Taiwan Normal University, I had taught English in junior high schools in the Taipei metropolitan area for 12 years by the time I decided to take a road less traveled. Ever since then, the decision has proven most appropriate and productive.
Throughout my school education, the English language was always the one subject that gave me the most challenge and delight. However, my first encounter with this language cannot be depicted as encouraging. I attended junior high with no inkling of it at all, and beyond question my test scores were pretty much a scandal. From there, it was a great leap forward to the full marks I earned at the Joint Entrance Exams to Senior High School. That was my first taste of major success in language learning, and this experience led to the strategy I have adopted up to now—keep outdoing myself; it’s better late than never. Staying in “the comfort zone” is never a member of my gene pool.
With several other rewarding experiences with language learning in senior high and afterward, I find that teaching language can very well be charity. As the cliché goes, language opens a window to the outside world. Trite as the saying may sound, more than a few people in Taiwan are still waiting for that window to open. Some struggle with this foreign tongue; some simply give up as early as their first year learning it. I was there too, taking my daily dose of frustration. Now that I have my head above water, I’d very much like to pull others out of it as well. This explains why most of my working days end with a smile, because being able to do something for others rocks!
My name is Dawn, the time of day when sunlight first appears in the east. Helping people reach their goals in acquiring a second language is my lifelong career. Graduated with a major in education and minor in English from the National Taiwan Normal University, I had taught English in junior high schools in the greater Taipei area for 12 years before I decided to take a road less traveled. Now time has proven the decision the right track to a fruitful career. When I was a student, the English language was always the one subject that gave me the most challenge and delight. However, my first encounter with this foreign language wasn’t very encouraging. I entered middle school with no inkling of it at all—my low test scores said it all. But I slowly picked up the pace, and the full mark I earned at the Joint Entrance Exams to Senior High School was a great leap forward. I got my first taste of major success in language learning. One thing that I learned was I wanted to outdo myself, a principle that I still uphold till this very day. Staying in the comfort zone was never in my genes. Fortunately, I had a few other rewarding experiences with English language learning in high school. After I started teaching, I found that teaching language can very well be doing a good deed. As the cliché goes, language opens a window to the outside world. Trite as the saying may sound, a long line of people in Taiwan are still waiting for that window to open. Some continue to struggle with this foreign tongue; some simply give up after just one year. I was once where they were, taking my daily dose of frustration. Now that I have my head above water, I’d very much like to pull others out of it as well. This explains why most of my working days end with a smile, because being able to do something for others rocks!
