Streisand never liked interviews but in 1976 she was releasing a new movie ("A Star is Born"), a new boyfriend (Jon Peters) and a new hairdo (afro). It was time for a mainstream media interview. Walters went to Barbra and Peters's Malibu compound and they did a historic interview. After it Walters claimed she never again gave control of her interviews to anyone since Streisand edited out the whole thing. And yes, Sinatra's voice is a little ragged around the edges, but that only makes you appreciate the sheer genius of the man. Sinatra's body of work evolved - just as his voice did. He wasn't afraid to experiment and take chances. "Watertown" is a great example. And he wasn't afraid to record during the final years of his career with a voice that no longer was the exquisite instrument it had once been. But not to have recorded this album would have robbed Sinatraphiles of a final opportunity to appreciate what a musical genius the man was, and what he could still do with a voice that was almost eighty-years old. The duets work - all of them. Bennett, Minelli, Natalie Cole, and Luther Vandross are wonderful and complement Sinatra's artistry perfectly. Tony Bennett's voice has a raspiness to it now, but he too is still a great vocalist, just like Sinatra. I only wish that Barry Manilow and Engelbert Humperdinck could have been included somehow. This is a final treasure that is like a rare, distilled aged scotch. It is a conoisseur's delight and a unique one-of-a kind treasure that can never be replaced or equaled once it's gone. And now that Sinatra is gone, we have the great good fortune of being able to compare and contrast his great body of work from start to finish, and believe me, the end is every bit as good as the beginning, and "Duets" is no exception.
