If enjoying the magnificent fjord is like listening to the great Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg's symphony, then the endearing contact with these seagulls would be the intermezzo to me.
We took the trip in lovely and sunny days of June, drove from Stockholm via Oslo to Flam. From there we planned to take the boat and enjoy the marvelous scenery of fjord. After we embarked on the boat from Flam, hungry seagulls followed the boat all the way to the next stop Gudvangen. Along this picturesque fjord, one of the passengers fed those seagulls with breadcrumbs, which caused some attention. When it was my turn, I tossed a small piece of bun to them. Amazingly, none of the crumbs had been missed. No matter how I threw it or how the wind blew, nothing affected them to catch the food accurately. When I fed the seagulls, they flew so close to me. I felt the wind under their flapping wings. I saw their little black-beaned eyes shining with enthusiasm, while they were flapping their wings craving for food and screaming eagerly to get you attention. Their strong will to survive struck me immensely. While they were flying above and looking down at me, I heard a little voice coming from my heart "Lift me up! Let me fly with you and show me the rest of the world!" Suddenly, the flash light brought me back to reality. There stood my beloved husband with a cheerful smile after he took a snapshot of me and seagulls. If I were the seagull, he would be the wind under my wings. I turned and smiled at him and threw him a kiss. (March 31st, 2004 at Shinchu City) |
