hello friends
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English. My name is Esther.
And my name is Garrett.
Are you excited for another story lesson?
The name of today’s story is "The Magic Pot."
The magic pot—here, a "pot" means something you cook in.
You put food into the pot, heat it up, and then it’s ready to eat.
But this one is very special. It’s a magic pot.
Maybe it can do something special that most pots cannot do.
All right, it’ll be a little different from any pot we can find in the real world.
I don’t think there are any magic pots sitting around.
That’s true.
And today we’ll need to answer our Find It question.
Our question is:
What did the old woman give Lucy?
What did the old woman give Lucy?
Well, the answer will be in our story today.
You just need to find the answer!
Now let’s go to Sonia, who will teach us our keywords.
Lucy
Lucy was gathering berries in the forest.
She handed Lucy a small old pot.
"This is a magic pot."
The pot bubbled and filled with delicious hot porridge.
Lucy and her mother were full and happy for the first time in ages.
The Magic Pot
Listen carefully when someone gives instructions.
Once upon a time, a poor girl named Lucy lived in a small village.
She was kind and helped others when she could,
but she and her mother were often very hungry because they were poor.
One day, Lucy was gathering berries in the forest.
She met an old woman.
“Hello,” said Lucy. “How are you today?”
“Not well,” said the old woman. “I am poor and very hungry.”
Lucy felt sorry for her, so she gave the woman all her berries.
Well, we start our story off by learning about one of our characters.
This character is named Lucy, and she lived in a small village.
That’s like a small town, right?
And she was kind, and she liked to help others.
She tried to help others, but she and her mother were very hungry because they were poor.
They didn’t have very much money.
They didn’t have very much money to buy food.
Then, one day, Lucy was gathering berries in the forest.
Remember, friends, berries are small fruits that grow on bushes or small plants.
Right—like blueberries and strawberries.
And when you gather something, it means you collect it together.
So she’s going to these berry plants, pulling the berries off the bush, and collecting them.
She’s gathering them together and then probably taking them home.
But while she’s out, she meets an old woman.
And Lucy says, “Hello, how are you today?”
Well, we find out that the old woman tells Lucy, “Not well.”
She is not doing very well.
She says, “I’m poor and very hungry.”
Right—it sounds a bit like Lucy and her mother.
Well, Lucy feels sorry for the old woman, so she gives the woman all her berries.
Friends, let’s go to Sonia for more on that sentence.
Lucy felt sorry for her, so she gave the woman all her berries.
I feel sorry for that bird. It can’t fly.
The mom felt sorry for her crying baby.
I feel sorry for Matt. He didn’t get to see the show.
Thank you, Sonia.
Well, Lucy is very kind. Let’s find out what she does next.
The old woman smiled and said, "Thank you, dear child. You have a kind heart. I wish to give you something in return."
She handed Lucy a small old pot.
"This is a magic pot," she said.
"When you say, 'Cook, little pot, cook,' it will make warm, delicious porridge.
And when you want it to stop, just say, 'Stop, little pot, stop.'”
"Oh, thank you!" cried Lucy.
She ran home to show her mother the magic pot.
So Lucy gave the old woman all of her berries,
and the old woman is very thankful, right?
She tells Lucy, "Thank you, dear child. You have a kind heart."
If someone has a kind heart,
they often think of others and they do or say nice things to help other people, right?
They’re kind all the way through—the person that they are.
You have a kind heart.
And friends, that is today’s calendar phrase:
You have a kind heart.
I love others. — You have a kind heart.
I am nice to others. — You have a kind heart.
And I give to others. — You have a kind heart.
Oh, would you like a cookie?
Oh yes, thank you!
You’re welcome!
I have a kind heart too.
Thanks.
You have a kind heart.
You have a kind heart.
All right, so Lucy did something nice for the old woman, and she is thankful and wants to do something nice for Lucy.
So she gives her a small old pot, right?
She tells her, "I wish to give you something in return."
And a pot is something that we cook food in.
So we used the words:
"She handed Lucy a small pot."
She didn’t give Lucy her hand—it means she gave it to her,
right? Usually by using her hands to give it.
Now, friends, let’s answer our Find It question:
What did the old woman give Lucy?
She gave her a magic pot.
The old woman tells Lucy:
"This is a magic pot."
If something is magic here, it doesn’t mean they’re doing a trick.
It means this pot can do something that is not possible in the normal world, right?
Maybe the pot can talk, or maybe it can make things.
We’re going to find out what it can do.
The old woman said:
"When you say, 'Cook, little pot, cook,' it will make warm, delicious porridge.
And porridge is a good thing to eat.
When you want it to stop, say, 'Stop, little pot, stop.'”
So she goes home to show her mom.
And we’re going to take a break. We’ll be right back.
Let’s Talk in English. Let’s Talk in English.
Let’s stand there till the day, every day.
Welcome back to the show, everyone.
So now Lucy has a magic pot that can make porridge whenever she asks it to, right?
Let’s find out what happens next.
That night, they tried the magic pot.
"Cook, little pot, cook!" Lucy said.
The pot bubbled and filled with delicious hot porridge.
"Hmm," said her mother, finishing her porridge.
"May I have more?"
"Of course," said Lucy.
"There is plenty."
Soon, Lucy and her mother were full and happy for the first time in ages.
Then Lucy said:
"Stop, little pot, stop!"
And the pot stopped cooking.
From that day on, Lucy and her mother never went hungry again.
Well, remember, Lucy and her mother are often very hungry because they’re poor.
But now this pot can help make food for them.
So they try it out, right?
And remember, the old woman said,
All you need to say is: "Cook, little pot, cook."
And then the pot will make food for you.
So the pot bubbled and filled with delicious hot porridge.
Here, the action of it bubbling means it was cooking,
and there were little air bubbles on top of it.
And she and her mother are enjoying this porridge—mmm!
Her mother likes it. That’s the sound you make when something tastes good.
Lucy’s mother says:
"May I have more?" She wants some more.
And so Lucy says:
"There is plenty." There is enough for both of them.
Soon, Lucy and her mother were full and happy for the first time in ages, right?
If you are full, it means you are not hungry anymore.
And here, the word ages means a very long time.
It had been a long time since they were full.
So Lucy says:
"Stop, little pot, stop."
They don’t need any more porridge because they’re full,
and so the pot stops.
And from that day on, Lucy and her mother never went hungry again.
That means that she and her mother didn’t need to worry about buying food
because they had this magic pot.
And this started from this day.
Let’s go to Sonia for more on this.
表時間的副詞片語 from that day on 是「從那一天開始」的意思。
例如:
From that day on, Helen always told the truth.
From now on, I will ask your opinion first.
From then on, the children played together.
Thank you so much, Sonia.
Well, the end of our story today sounds like the end of the story.
Lucy and her mother are happy.
They will never be hungry again.
The end—well, not exactly.
We will continue this story tomorrow.
First, let’s go to our Key Words.
Here’s our first key word:
gather
Gather your things and let’s leave.
hand
Please hand me a pencil.
magic
He found a magic lamp.
bubble
The water bubbled in the pot.
ages
I saw him ages ago.
Friends, those are today’s key words. You’re doing great!
And now it’s your turn.
The words for today are: gather, hand, magic, bubbled, and ages.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First one:
Did you watch the ___ show? It was so cool.
→ Did you watch the magic show?

Join me next time for Your Turn.
The Magic Pot
Listen carefully when someone gives instructions.

She was kind and helped others when she could.
But she and her mother were often very hungry because they were poor.

Then Lucy said,
“Stop, little pot, stop!”
And the pot stopped cooking.
From that day on, Lucy and her mother never went hungry again.
One, two, let’s review!
Hey Hazel, what do you have there?
This is a magic pot.
A magic pot? Really?
Well, not really—but it reminds me of the pot in today’s story.
Oh! The story of The Magic Pot!
That’s right.
The story begins with a poor girl named Lucy.
She lived with her mom.
They were often hungry because they were poor.
One day, Lucy was gathering berries. She met an old woman.
“I’m poor and very hungry,” the woman said.
Lucy felt sorry for her and gave the woman the berries.
“You have a kind heart,” the old woman told Lucy,
and handed her a magic pot.
If you say to the pot, “Cook, little pot, cook,”
it makes warm, delicious porridge.
And if you say, “Stop, little pot, stop,” it stops cooking.
Lucy ran home to show her mother the magic pot.
They tried it out—and it worked!
The pot bubbled and filled with delicious hot porridge.
Ah! They were full and happy for the first time in ages.
What a great story!
Yes—and that’s not all.
Now let’s go over today’s lesson with two questions.
Here’s your first one:
Why were Lucy and her mother happy?
You can find the answer in part three:
→ Because they were full for the first time in ages.
Here’s our other question:
Who are you kind to?
Let’s go to some of our friends to hear their answers.
Who am I kind to?
Well, I try to be kind to everybody.
Sometimes it is hard to be kind, because sometimes you’re just too busy or you’re too tired.
But the first person that I should be kind to is myself.
Are you kind? Who are you kind to?
Who am I kind to?
Well, I try to be kind to everyone. But it’s not always easy.
Whenever I meet someone who looks like they need help,
I always try to think, How can I be kind and help them do something that they need?
Who am I kind to?
Well, I’m kind to my parents, my brother.
I’m also kind to my co-workers and friends.
But I try to be kind to everyone I see. What about you?
Who am I kind to?
Well, I try to be kind to everyone,
because I think being kind is part of being what a human person should do.
So whether it’s someone at the store or someone I meet when I travel,
I try to smile and speak to other people in a kind way.
Grandpa, who are you kind to?
Oh, that’s easy!
I try to be kind to everybody—my friends, my family, and my dog.
Oh, especially Grandma!
I’m always kind to Grandma, and she’s usually kind to me.
Yeah!
Friends, who are you kind to?
I think it’s good to be kind to everyone,
because people are people. We need to treat them well, right?
In this story, Lucy’s kindness meant that the old woman wanted to be kind to her as well.
This doesn’t always happen in real life—but often, it does.
Friends, we’ll see you again tomorrow to continue our story, right here on Let’s Talk in English. Goodbye!

hello everyone
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Garrett.
And my name is Esther.
Today our topic is story.
We’ll continue the story we started yesterday.
Remember, its title is The Magic Pot.
We learned about Lucy and her mother.
They didn’t have a lot of money,
but Lucy did have a lot of kindness.
She sure did! One time, when she was gathering berries,
she gave all her berries to an old woman,
who later gave her a magic pot.
This magic pot
could keep making porridge
all the way until they told it to stop.
But there is one thing—
this means they’d have to eat a lot of porridge.
Right!
And porridge is something that you make with something like rice
or oatmeal and some water.
It’s kind of thick—not like a soup,
more like a stew. Mmm!
And it will make you quite full,
but it doesn’t taste like much.
Well, friends,
let’s go to our Find It question:
What couldn’t Lucy’s mother remember?
What couldn’t Lucy’s mother remember?
It sounds like Lucy’s mother forgot something.
Indeed! Well, friends,
pay attention to our story to find the answer.
Now let’s go to Sonya.
They were very grateful.
"I know, I know," her mother interrupted.
Porridge spilled out of the pot.
Lucy
She quickly shouted, "Stop, little pot, stop!"
Everyone laughed at the funny situation.
Anytime Lucy and her mother were hungry,
the pot cooked them a perfect meal.
They also shared their porridge with their neighbors.
They were very grateful.
One day, Lucy wanted to go out.
"If you're hungry, Mother, say the magic words,
then the pot will cook," said Lucy.
"I know," said her mother.
"And when you want it to stop," said Lucy—
"I know, I know," her mother interrupted.
"Now be on your way!"
But it sounds like Lucy and her mother used this pot a lot.
Whenever they were hungry,
they got a perfect meal from it.
Yes, and they are kind people.
They also share their porridge
with their neighbors—the people who live
around or close to them.
Right!
They don’t even have to buy any new food to share—
they can just use their magic pot.
These neighbors are very grateful.
When you’re grateful, you are thankful.
Those are similar words.
You’re happy for something someone has done for you.
And remember to spell this word correctly.
It’s grateful: G-R-A-T-E-F-U-L.
Yes! And continuing—
as Lucy is leaving the house one day,
she says to her mother:
"If you’re hungry, say the magic words."
Right! Remember, the old lady
told them what to say to the pot.
Now, there are many words we can use
when we talk about a mother.
You can say mom, ma, mama.
Sanya, can you help us?
"If you’re hungry, Mother, say the magic words."
Where are you, Mother?"
Mom, what are we having for dinner?"
My mama loves me very much."
或是:"She wants her mommy."
Thank you, Sonia.
Lucy tells her mother to say these magic words
so the pot will cook for her.
And her mother says, "I know."
This is not the first time they’ve done this.
And Lucy reminds her,
"When you want it to stop, you say—"
But the mother stops her and says,
"I know, I know!"
She doesn’t want Lucy to keep talking.
And we use this word interrupt.
Her mother interrupted her.
When you interrupt someone,
you don’t let them finish talking—
you say something first.
Right!
It’s not very polite to interrupt other people.
Well, Lucy’s mother tells Lucy,
"Now be on your way."
That means: now go.
Exactly! Let’s keep watching.
After Lucy left, her mother was hungry.
She said to the pot, "Cook, little pot, cook!"
The pot began to bubble and fill with porridge.
When the pot was full,
her mother said, "That’s enough, pot!"
But the pot didn’t stop.
So she said, "Stop! Stop, pot!"
But the pot didn’t stop.
Lucy’s mother couldn’t remember the words to make it stop.
Porridge spilled out of the pot.
It soon filled the kitchen.
Then porridge flowed out the door
and into the village!
So it’s a good thing Lucy reminded her mother.
As Lucy was gone, her mother did get hungry.
Right!
And the mother says to the pot:
"Cook, little pot, cook!"
Exactly!
And whenever you say those magic words,
that pot begins to bubble and fill up with porridge
that she can eat.
But the mother had had enough food. The pot was full,
so the mother wanted the pot to stop.
This time, she said, “That’s enough, pot.” But what happened?
Well, she didn’t say those
magic words that the old woman taught them,
so the pot didn’t stop.
Again, she said, “Stop! Stop, pot!”
But those are not the magic words either.
And that leads us to the answer to today’s Find It question.
Our question was: What couldn’t Lucy’s mother remember?
She couldn’t remember the words to make the pot stop.
She didn’t know what sentence to say,
and so the porridge didn’t just fill up the pot—
it spilled out of the pot.
Right! If something spills out,
it means it’s coming out; it is falling out.
If you have a glass of water,
be careful not to spill it.
That’s when the water comes out of the cup—
and probably onto the ground.
Well, soon the porridge filled the kitchen,
and then flowed out the door
and into the village.
Right! Can you picture this in your head?
This porridge is coming out from their home
and filling the streets in their village.
Exactly.
Friends, let’s take a quick break.
We’ll be right back after this.
Let’s Talk in English
Let’s Talk in English — ten minutes every day, every day!
Welcome back to the show, everyone.
We heard that porridge
flowed out of their house and into the village.
When something flows,
it moves across the land—
usually from a high place to a low place.
Right. Think of rain flowing down the mountain,
or a waterfall flowing down.
Exactly. What’s going to happen to the village?
Let’s find out.
When Lucy came back,
she saw porridge flooding the village.
She quickly shouted,
“Stop, little pot, stop!”
And the pot stopped cooking.
The village was covered in porridge,
but everyone laughed at the funny situation.
“Look at all this porridge!”
said a man.
“What will we do with it?”
“Eat it!” said another.
Then the people ate porridge for breakfast,
lunch, and dinner until it was all gone.
After that, Lucy and her mother used the pot carefully.
They always remembered the magic words.
All right! So we move a bit later in time,
and now Lucy has come back home
to see what has happened, right?
And she sees this porridge
flooding the village.
This means the village is covered with porridge.
So she quickly shouts, “Stop, little pot, stop!”
She shouts it—or says it very loudly.
Now she remembers those magic words,
and so the pot stops cooking.
But the village was covered in porridge,
and everyone laughed because it was so funny.
It was a funny situation.
That’s good—that they thought this was funny
and weren’t too angry.
When something’s funny, it makes you laugh.
It might make you happy, too.
Right. When people laugh,
they might make sounds like “ha ha!” or things like that.
And a situation is something that happens
that you might need to do something about.
Yeah! What happened?
Well, the village flooded with porridge.
One man said,
“Look at all this porridge! What will we do with it?”
And What will we do with it?
is also today’s Calendar Phrase.
What will we do with it? What will we do with it?
Look at this big hamburger. Woo!
What will we do with it?
Look at this big cupcake. Oh!
What will we do with it?
Look at this big doughnut. Whoa!
What will we do with it?
It’s so much food!
Eat it, of course!
Of course!
Oh yeah!
What will we do with it?
What will we do with it?
Well, what will they do with all this porridge?
One person says, “Eat it!”
And that’s what the people did.
The people ate the porridge for breakfast,
lunch, and dinner—until it was all gone.
And we won’t rest until
we understand that sentence.
Here, Sonya—
Then the people ate porridge for breakfast, lunch, and dinner until it was all gone.
She talked on the phone until it was time to eat.
Joe and I were roommates until he graduated.
He didn’t know until we told him.
We won’t start eating until all the guests arrive.
Thank you, Sonya.
Lucy and her mother still have the magic pot.
They just use it more carefully now,
so that nothing bad will happen.
That's right — they always say the correct magic words now.
Now, friends, let’s go ahead and review our key words.
Here is our first key word: grateful
Grateful – He was grateful for the kind words.
Interrupt
Interrupt – Don’t interrupt the teacher.
Spill
Spill – He spilled his milk on the floor.
Shout

Funny
Funny – That movie was very funny.
Friends, those are today’s key words. Keep practicing!
And now, it’s your turn.
Today’s words are grateful, interrupting, spill, shout, and funny.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First one:
Don’t ______ the sugar. Pour it carefully.
Don’t spill the sugar.
Next:
She laughed at his ______ story.
This is easy!
She laughed at his funny story.
Next:
Why are you ______ me? I’m still talking.
Why are you interrupting me?
Next:
You don’t need to ______. I hear you.
Did you guess the answer?
You don’t need to shout. I hear you.
Last one:
She has a good job. She’s ______.
Great answer!
She has a good job. She’s grateful.
And I’m grateful that you could join me for Your Turn.
Anytime Lucy and her mother were hungry,
the pot cooked them a perfect meal.
They also shared their porridge with their neighbors.
They were very grateful.
One day, Lucy wanted to go out.
“If you’re hungry, Mother, say the magic words.

“I know,” said her mother.

“Now be on your way.”

Then the people ate porridge for breakfast,

After that, Lucy and her mother used the pot carefully.
They always remembered the magic words.
One, two, let’s review!
We’re still talking about the magic pot today.
That’s right!
Anytime Lucy and her mom were hungry,
the pot cooked them a meal.
And they shared the porridge with their neighbors.
Everyone was grateful and full.
One day, Lucy wanted to go out.
She reminded her mom:
“If you’re hungry, say the magic words.”
“I know,” said her mom.
“And when you want it to stop, you say—”
“I know, I know!”
“Now be on your way!” her mom interrupted.
After Lucy left, things got interesting.
Her mother was hungry,
so she said to the pot:
“Cook, little pot, cook.”
And the pot bubbled and filled with porridge.
When it was full,
Mother said: “That’s enough, pot.”
But the pot didn’t stop.
“Stop! Stop! Stop, pot!”
But it didn’t stop.
She forgot the words.
So the pot kept cooking and cooking and cooking.
Porridge spilled out of the pot.
It filled the kitchen
and flowed out the door and into the village.
Finally, Lucy came back and said:
“Stop, little pot, stop!”
And it did!
That’s funny!
Yes, everyone laughed and ate porridge for breakfast,
lunch, and dinner.
That’s a good story.
Yeah, I like it too.
Hello Maria, what are you doing here?
I’m here to ask you a question.
Oh, that’s right—you ask me questions and I answer them.
So, are you ready for the first question?
Yes, I’m always ready.
So what’s the question?
What did the village people do with all the porridge?
What porridge?
The porridge that spilled
out of the magic pot and flooded the village.
Oh, that porridge! Yes, what did they do with it?
Well, they ate it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Yes, that’s correct!
That’s a lot of porridge.
It sure is!
So Grandpa, here’s the next question.
Well, I’m ready.
What can’t you remember sometimes?
Hmm… I can’t remember.
You can’t remember what you can’t remember?
That’s correct.
That’s because I remember everything.
So… you can’t remember what you can’t remember
because you remember everything?
Yes, that’s correct.
No… that’s crazy. It doesn’t make sense!
Sure it does—think about it!
All right, Esther, we finished up this month’s story lesson.
Did you learn anything from this story?
Yes! I learned that when we do things,
we need to be careful to do them in the right way—
do things correctly.
Right. And I think I learned that it’s important
not to interrupt someone when they’re reminding you of something
you might think you remember—
but it’s always good to double check.
That’s very true.
Friends, thank you so much for joining us.
We look forward to seeing you again tomorrow!
That’s right—here on
Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!
