and we are having a whale of a time
even though we are not talking about whales
like we were earlier this month
but i do have a question for you
because we are talking about people
who aspire to excellence in their work
so i actually want to talk about one of the

what do you feel is necessary for someone to do excellent work

i think it’s a dedication to hard work
a dedication to improving their skills and a good work
ethic so dedication
or like a commitment to really improving all the time
and that goes hand in hand with a good work ethic right
so you didn’t mention money
money is not necessary to have excellent work
no money can help it
can help you achieve your goals
but even people who started out in situations
where they didn’t have a lot of money through
hard work and dedication to making themselves better
were very successful in life
all right friends how would you answer this question well
after we get through this lesson

because it’s always fun to be inspired by real people

so the idea is that there is love
that will be remembered long after whoever
we’re talking about is gone

it is the force that is pushing something forward
it is an idea or a concept that makes something happen yeah
what drives you
it doesn’t necessarily have to drive you to success
but what makes you go forward and want to go forward in life
that’s a good question to ask in every area of life
in your relationships
or at work what really drives you to improve or to succeed
so one family sees love as the driving force what do you see

i often hear
this word used when talking about someone’s law firm

we just take it for granted right
we’re working in this building that

lets talk a little bit about the idea of vision
now if someone has vision
it means that they have something maybe in the future
that they want to accomplish
and have a big idea that to them is really important
and generally
they are very passionate about it
some people have a vision to help
underprivileged people
that’s what they’re trying to accomplish it’s a goal
they’re going towards yeah
someone recently asked me
what the difference is between the word
vision and mission
because sometimes we use them to mean the same thing
a company should have a mission and a vision
i think maybe a slight difference
is you could think of the vision
as where you’re going
where your company is going
and the mission as what you’re doing to get there
yeah right that sounds about right
all right so also
we need to talk about this word functionality that just talks
that’s referring to how useful something is that’s right
you see the word function there that’s
the idea of what use does
this thing have what function does it serve right
so the functionality here
maybe i would also contrast
with maybe the aesthetics of a place
because you think of aesthetics
as just how pleasant looking something is
but things that are aesthetically pleasing
don’t necessarily serve a function
except for to make you say oh
that looks nice
but here we’re talking about functionality
the purpose the use and environmental impact
that’s right

we are talking about taking actions or making investments now

we are doing something that will benefit us
but not immediately if you want those seeds to grow
you have to take care of them and wait indeed Rex
there’s a similar phrase
laying the groundwork that also refers to doing things today
that will be useful later
we use those phrases in all kinds of situations right

that’s right we also learned about his wife

so she probably uses a lot of pans in her work
we also learned about Bertha
and bernice their daughters
who are following in their footsteps
exerting their influence on the world in their own unique ways
let’s learn a little bit more about them right now
today is a great day to learn something new

i often think of the word celebrity
when it comes to people like

and we see here that it is used with the word critical
we often see these two words used together
when talking about some type of work
whether that be music or film
something like that that has been judged by critics
these critics have said that this work is to a certain standard
and so we say that this has critical acclaim okay
so she’s done a lot of really cool things with film making right
and these films
but Bertha doesn’t just seek to amuse
i wonder why the writer wrote that is
it just because that’s all that movies do is they amuse us
sometimes they move us or sometimes they touch us right
that’s true when it looks like she’s wanting to do this

that is to develop something
or to help something grow in an environment
where it’s easy for it to grow
right the idea here is unity

some people actually have the profession of storyteller
they stand or sit on stage
and tell stories in a very entertaining way
and they are experts at telling stories but in general
you can actually use the word storyteller to talk about anybody
whose job is to communicate a story through different media
right so like with movies or even songs poems
books things
like that you can tell a story you can be a storyteller
that’s right by doing
so she helps to inspire people from all walks of life
all walks of life is a phrase
that we use to talk about different people
from different backgrounds
so this usually means that
some people may come from more well to do families
and some people maybe didn’t have a lot growing up
this can also refer to ethnicities or the country
that you come from
it can refer to all different types of people
so here’s another way
that we can use this phrase people from all walks of life
can enjoy the zoo
the Zoo is something that anyone can enjoy it’s true
and sometimes
a visit to the Zoo will require a lot of walking too
i never make it all the way through the Zoo
anyone visit yeah in the same way anyway
so all walks of life friends
she hopes to inspire people from all
different types of backgrounds
all walks of life to have meaningful conversations
with each other to promote positive change
she believes that despite their differences

because it probably deals with some of these issues

so there are some real events in life
but the story takes some of those things and puts it in there
but it’s not you know really closely tied whereas
if it’s based on other events
that means there’s a lot more of a connection between the two
so for example to be inspired by something

jr Tolkien i was just reading this
the other day he was inspired to write the lord of the rings
it was inspired by conversations with his son
oh very interesting
and the movie the lord of the rings of course
is based on the original books by the same title now you know
a little bit of the difference between those two phrases
all right well
let’s look at another word from this sentence
the word pursuing if you are pursuing something it
means you are chasing it
but we often use this when
talking about a specific career
or when you want your career in to begin in a certain field
for example he began pursuing a career in music from a young age
that means this is something he was working towards
this is something he was chasing okay
so bernice was pursuing architecture like her father
following in his footsteps however
her love for fashion led
her instead to the fashion industry
and eventually to establish her fashion line
it’s called deploy in 2006
now what is a fashion line
we’ve talked about lines every now
and then you can use the word line as a verb
sometimes the pictures lined the wall on the museum
but that’s not what it means here no a fashion line
here means it’s a set or a series of clothing
and they generally all follow a same type of design style
or maybe this fashion line serves a certain purpose
so maybe someone has an active wear clothing fashion line
that means the entire line is all devoted to close
you would wear in the gym now
i’m not sure why her fashion line is called deploy
but in general the word
deploy means to send out somewhere right
so these people or the group was deployed to go and do something
so deploy crafts sustainable
custom pieces that are fashionable yet eco friendly well
this is great great words right sustainable fashionable
eco friendly to review if something is sustainable
that means it’s not only a good practice
right now for the environment
but even if you were to continue doing it years down the road
it would still be okay
it is sustainable now to write in the word fashional
of course could mean trendy
or it could mean that these clothes are in fashion something
that people want to wear in the modern day
and of course
eco friendly means that they are good for the environment

torch is always a highlight runners from different countries
pass the torch from one person to another
and the final runner lights
a big torch at the center this actually starts the games
so it is kind of like a relay race in a relay race
you pass a metal baton from one runner to the next
but a torch is different from a baton
because it has fire all of that to say
when we talk about passing the torch or baton to someone else
we mean giving them
a responsibility maybe when someone is retiring at work
they will pass the torch to the person replacing them
it is that person’s responsibility to keep doing the job
there is the idea that the person who received
a torch will keep going
or even finish the race for example
the father decided it was time to pass the torch to his son
and let him take over the family business

is the idea of asking someone to continue your legacy

or a noun phrase like environmentally conscious fashion

that’s right
when we use four instead of two after the word strives
it means that there is a certain goal involved here
the certain goal is environmentally conscious fashion
why is she doing this
this is to reduce adverse effects from material sourcing
to product disposal
leaving a better world okay
let’s talk about those two practices here for a minute
material sourcing is a term
that is used to talk about
where you get the materials to make something
so there are a lot of different places you can get materials
to make clothing
right some of those places
could be more destructive to the planet than others
it’s true and most of the time after
we’re finished using certain things
we just throw them away
you’ve heard the words reuse reuse and recycle often
we just dispose of these things instead of reducing
reusing or recycling
but it sounds like bernice is into reusing certain materials
but speaking of disposing something here
you see the word disposal
that means to throw something away
or the act of throwing something away
but it also reminded me of a phrase
if something is at your disposal in that situation
it doesn’t really mean to throw away
if something is at your disposal
that means it is there for you to use if you really want to
that’s a good point here in our lesson
though we’re talking about the way
that she is getting rid of materials
once she’s done using them
or the way that she is getting rid of excess product
when people are done using it
so where she is getting the materials to make her products
and what she is doing with them when they’re no longer usable
are two things that she is focusing on all right
the pans may all work in different fields
but they all have a common objective

an objective is a goal
i like to think of it as a very specific
type of goal because we all have goals in life
or we all should have some kind of goals in life
some of them are a little
more general or vague
and some are very specific when it comes to doing a project
for example
it’s good to have an objective that is a very specific goal
that’s right each in their own way
talking about all of these family members
hopes to leave a legacy
that blesses people for generations to come yesterday
we talked about the pans leaving a legacy of love
and we see that phrase a legacy here again to leave a legacy
that means to have something for people to remember you
by after you’re gone
we should all strive to leave a good legacy

Peter pan haha okay
he’s not related to the family
but Peter pan is well
he has a similarly spelled last name
Peter pan did not design any buildings or help in education
but he did fly and fight pirates
so that’s something for him and that is today’s fun pan fact

it is what would you do to leave the world a
better place this is a really deep question
i don’t have to think too long about it
though the thing that i’m doing now to hopefully leave the world
a better place is to raise my children in the right way
and make sure that they can be productive members of society
that they can show love to others
and that they can accomplish their life goals yeah
that’s one of the legacies that we leave with our kids
right the character that we try to develop in them
the ways
we like to help them grow so to leave a legacy in your kids
is really important
think about the way that you are raising them
leaving the world a better place for me
i also think about influencing other people
in a really positive way
maybe especially people
whom society kind of looks down on in some ways
and just kind of reminding them that they are loved as well
and treating everybody with respect friends
